For many Omaha residents, transportation means pulling a car out of a driveway and spending about 15 minutes swerving between potholes to reach a destination – maybe 30 minutes when facing construction or congestion.
The metropolitan area’s transit system is more complex than that, though. Walking, biking, public buses, ride sharing apps and, as of this week, electric scooters play a role in moving people around the city, and that motion is critical to the area’s economic vitality.

The Kiwanis Club of Omaha celebrated its centennial year by presenting the City of Omaha with a $25,000 donation toward improvements at Miller Park.
The donation will bring a Sutu Soccer Wall to the 80-acre park at 2707 Redrick Ave. The wall features 16 smart panels that measure and react to impact, and it uses lights and sound to provide feedback. It can be used both as a recreation device and as part of a soccer training program.
“Kids in the community need a safe place to play,” Christopher Tooker, the club’s immediate past president, said in a release.
Omaha attorney David L. Herzog was a kind man who took the time to maintain relationships by writing notes, sharing articles and leaving a lasting impression on many in the local community.
As an attorney, Herzog was intense and didn’t like leaving anything to chance. He had an inquisitive mind and sought to understand the law, even when that meant pouring over the small nuisance of shades of meaning.
After a long battle with lung disease, Herzog died April 16 at age 81. He was practicing law up until the day of his death.
The Nebraska Bankers Association elected its 2019-20 officers last Thursday at its annual conference in La Vista.

More than 200 members of Omaha’s legal community gathered Wednesday for a luncheon marking the annual celebration of Law Day with the presentation of awards and a keynote address on this year’s theme, “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.”
The Omaha Bar Association recognized several community outreach efforts organized as part of Law Day, including an annual mock trial, classroom visits by lawyers and judges, and essay and poster contests for area students.
