A Lifelong Adventure: Seven Duchesne High School Students Excel Winning Nebraska’s State Mock Trial Championship

In popular culture and in card games, deuces signifies a card, say a two of diamonds. 

A team of seven students from Duchesne brought home the state mock trial championship for the second year in a row, shining the light on blending academic studies with real world experience - a true gem of stature for the students and a nod to their school and the Nebraska educational system.

Black tie optional was the dress code for this year’s Barristers’ Ball, held annually. 560 registrations were received for the April 13, 2024 gala. Held at the Embassy Suites in LaVista, Nebraska, conversation among colleagues, dinner and dancing to the KC FLO band melded with fun and spirited bidding in the silent and live auctions. The whimsical evening’s theme was “An Evening In Wonderland.”

The Law Day Essay Contest is open to all Omaha area 8th graders, and Nebraska Court Reporters Association coordinated the judging of the essays. Essays are limited to 250 words, and shall discuss the 2024 Law Day Theme of "Voices of Democracy." The winning essay will be published in the OBA Newsletter, online, and potentially in The Daily Record newspaper.

The Law Day Poster Contest is adjudicated by the Nebraska Paralegal Association . The contest is open to Omaha area 5th graders. The winning poster will be put on display for the month of May on a billboard in Omaha.1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will receive cash prizes from the Omaha Bar Association.

February’s Omaha Table Talk, hosted by University of Nebraska-Omaha and with a pilot launch of a dual event in Lincoln, focused on re-entry into society for the justice impacted. Hosted by the Omaha Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), this panel was run by Shakur Abdullah, Senior Restorative Justice Trainer at the Community Justice Center as well as Restorative Justice Coordinator at Creighton University.
