Honoring Our Heroes

Published by jason@omahadail... on Thu, 11/09/2023 - 4:00am

Nebraska is home to over 100,000 of our most honorable American heroes. These heroes left home and family to follow a call. They showed grit and dedication throughout taxing training. They fought hard for their homeland and made countless sacrifices. Many of them made the ultimate sacrifice — they sacrificed their own lives to protect others.

These heroes are our veterans.

November Reminders Of Hair And Health

Published by jason@omahadail... on Wed, 11/08/2023 - 4:00am

Let’s pause for a moment — amid the fire and ice of war; the GOP House conference congratulating itself for choosing an election denying, conspiracy theorizing speaker; and more murderous consequences of our infatuation with an unregulated militia — to bring you this announcement: As of this writing, I’ve shaved every day since Halloween.

Top Priority For Nebraska’s TANF Funds Should Be Direct Cash Assistance

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 11/07/2023 - 1:00am

Imagine Nebraska’s economy as a big ladder that reaches from poverty to prosperity. Most of us like to believe that we got to our place on the ladder through our own hard work, and we want to believe that others closer to the ground are perfectly capable of climbing as high as they would like.

The Mike Johnson Debacle

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 11/06/2023 - 1:00am

Let me preface what I am about to write by saying that I like and respect Congressman Don Bacon. I thoroughly supported him in his efforts to keep Jim Jordan from becoming Speaker of the House.

On The SCOTUS, Social Media And Public Officials

Published by jason@omahadail... on Fri, 11/03/2023 - 4:00am

Some lower courts have divined in the First Amendment’s penumbra a right to follow politicians on social media. On Tuesday the Supreme Court will consider whether the Constitution bars public officials from blocking constituents on their personal accounts (O’Connor-Ratcliff v. Garnier and Lindke v. Freed).

Proceed With Caution

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 11/02/2023 - 2:00am

As I go to various states pursuing distressed property acquisitions, I am finding an uptick in the number of sellers that are willing to sell their off-market properties. These include probate situations, tired landlords, elderly moving to assisted living, vacant properties, bankruptcies, and pre-foreclosures. The problem is, sellers still have the impression their homes are worth a lot more than is often the case.

Small Changes Can Have Big Impact On Child Care Crisis

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 10/31/2023 - 1:00am

Sometimes, it’s easier to start with baby steps.

This is perhaps true, appropriately, in the case of the ongoing child care crisis in Nebraska, a large and seemingly insurmountable problem that leaves families in a lurch — especially those below the poverty line or those living in rural child care deserts — both in terms of access and cost.

Dangerous Nitrate Levels Are No Game, Nebraskans Deserve Solutions

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 10/30/2023 - 6:00am

Recently there was much discussion about an article from the Flatwater Free Press regarding the nitrates in the water on and near Gov Pillen’s hog farms and the comments the Governor made about them on KFAB radio.

When morning host Gary Sadlemeyer asked the Governor if he had read the article, he said he hadn’t and dismissed it because the author was from Communist China.
