In Pursuit of : The Caribbean, Elie’s Chinchorro

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 04/08/2025 - 7:00am
An outstanding Cuban rated 10/10 by an old South Omaha Dad, with crispy fries. Worth it to go and try if you are looking for the perfect Cuban.
(Austin Petak / The Daily Record)

A fresh morning drizzle on Saturday either lended to or came from the heavy fog, priced by downtown Omaha’s few skyscrapers. The view from Cummings Street was thankfully unobstructed as I drove to the next restaurant on my list. It was not fair to my destination that in my Jetta’s passenger seat sat a grizzled veteran of the trade – a man who had lived long enough to garner and weed out many opinions about the food in Omaha,

Imagine this: There I was, thinking I had discovered the hardest thing to do when asked by a child to skip a rock across a loose pile of hay, when my editor Maggie interrupted me solemnly. “Austin, I know it's tough," she began while I froze up. Tension piled up inside me as she continued, “I need you to go try out the best wings in Omaha, at Tracks."

In Pursuit of : Tacos Everyday for a Week

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 01/21/2025 - 7:00am
Taco Charrito: absolutely slammin' two dollar beef tacos with the best tortilla I've had in a long time located at 36th and V Street in south Omaha as of Friday, January 17, 2025.
(Austin Petak / The Daily Record)

When my Editor came to me and asked if I wanted to get paid to head to 36th and V Street to write about street tacos, I did my very best to hide my enthusiasm and remain as professional as possible.

In Pursuit of : The Best Lasagna In Town : Nicola’s

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 01/14/2025 - 7:00am
Lasagna Mediterranean from Nicola’s Italian Wine & Faire, a local Italian favorite right on 13th and Jackson.
 (John Shartrand)

As most stories that begin with a guy sitting alone at a bar, it’s usually about a woman; this time at least… it was about interviewing one. While waiting, I took out my little black book and started scribbling down descriptions of that which was around me.

(Carla Chance / The Daily Record)

Their ceramics can be found in tens of thousands of homes in Omaha and the country. While they might not ever fetch the price of a Picasso, the pieces are regarded as priceless works of art, not for their monetary value, but for their sentiment.
