The artist is dead. The accountant is out of a job. Lawyers are being replaced. Architects don’t need to sketch anymore. AI is here and slowly showing its ability to fill the shoes of any profession. As AI technology gets implemented in more avenues, we’re finding the places a machine can’t replace the human mind. The new technology has had a surge in the last year, but it is not new by any means.

The Beatrice Bakery has been a staple in Beatrice, NE for almost six decades. After the Lantz brothers immigrated from Germany in 1917 – with their grandmother’s fruitcake recipe in hand – they opened a bakery in St. Louis, MO to share their beloved grandmother’s fruitcake recipe.

Commercial Cafe has released a report ranking 123 cities in the United States regarding their STEM employment and the representation of women in STEM jobs. STEM; referring to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; is an area that women are often underrepresented, and many cities and organizations are pushing for more women to join. In 2017, the organization Women in STEM launched as an effort to get young women and high school kids to get interested in pursuing a career in STEM.

Many young people starting their first jobs are often unaware of what they are entitled to when it comes to fair work, and many older Nebraskans are in the dark as well. In a 2020 study by Oxfam, a global organization that works to both shed light on and fight inequality, Nebraska ranked 26th out of the 50 states – as well as Puerto Rico and Washington DC – when it came to wage policies, worker protections, and right to organize. For context, the #1 state was California, while North Carolina ranked 52nd.

Information recently released by OSHA has found that Amazon warehouse workers here in Nebraska are 53% more likely to be injured than those found in other states. These injuries are all considered preventable and could lead to being disabling.

In the modern era, most people have heard talk about the gig economy. The changing landscape of work has led to many jobs that would have previously been considered ‘nontraditional’. What qualifies as being part of the gig economy is actually pretty wide. Essentially, if you work as a freelancer or contracted worker, you are working a gig job. This includes everything from ride-share and food delivery jobs like Uber and DoorDash, tutoring, renting or flipping properties, and doing consulting work.

Head Brewer and Owner, Dan Brouillette, opened Lumen Beer Company this past June and recently brewed his 31st beer. No two brews have been the same. The small taproom at 1433 S 13th Street in Little Bohemia specializes in a lot of beers with a lot of flavor. Style-wise, Lumen focuses on hazy, fruit forward IPAs and Sours.

Tucked away behind an unassuming gate in Little Bohemia, lies an impressive courtyard with a 30-year-old Wisteria, a Pagoda tree, pear tree, apple tree, four different types of vines, two different ivies, a beautiful Magnolia, and an array of different kinds of flowers and grasses; all along old brick paths that lead up to a main house and a guest house. And that’s during the current season where, with its freshly shorn foliage, the garden more closely resembles the one in “The Secret Garden” before springtime.
