Marijuana can be a confusing topic. It has its own language and culture, without agreement on what to call it or how it’s measured.

For doctors and lawyers, this can become a challenge when working with marijuana cases – one only made worse by the fact that often the client or patient doesn’t know much about it.

Lawn Games, Talk on Sports in Omaha Part of OBA Field Day Festivities

Registrations are due Saturday, July 13, for the event, which will be held Monday, July 22, at the Champions Run golf course.

OBA Prepares To Transition Leadership Next Month

The annual Omaha Bar Association President’s Reception was held Tuesday, marking the upcoming transition to a new president and bar leadership.

OBA President Patrick Cooper welcomed incoming OBA President William Acosta-Trejo during brief remarks. Acosta-Trejo presented Cooper with a crystal gavel to thank him for his service to the organization.

Cooper discussed the values of the OBA that came out of a strategic planning process, and he highlighted the importance of promoting a sense of community, collegiality and mutual support in the Omaha legal profession.

Best Ways to Build Inclusive Environments Focus of NePA, OBA Seminar

The Nebraska Paralegal Association and Omaha Bar Association will hold their first joint event, focused on how to build inclusive work environments.

Unity in Diversity: Working Together to Achieve Success will be held Wednesday, June 5, from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Scott Conference Center in Omaha.

“This topic is something that we don’t really see in the Omaha area that much,” said Amber Roberts, current NePA president.

Ellick Award: Johnson Helped Spark Referrals For Unbundled Legal Services

Karisa D. Johnson knows she will be volunteering on the second Monday of every month, but she was surprised when that few hours of commitment each month translated into recognition for her impact on the legal community.

Johnson is the recipient of this year’s Alfred G. Ellick Lawyer Referral Award for her volunteer efforts over the past decade and for helping to establish that referrals for limited scope representation are permitted through the Omaha Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service.

Robert M. Spire Public Service Award: Fenner’s Legacy Spans Generations in Legal Community

The legal profession owes a debt of gratitude to Creighton University Law Professor G. Michael Fenner.

Fenner helped preserve the Nebraska State Bar Association in the immediate aftermath of its court-mandated transition to a voluntary membership. Fenner has facilitated visits by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas to teach law seminars at Creighton for more than two decades. On a personal level, Fenner has mentored, encouraged and supported countless law students and young attorneys as they began their careers.

Public Service Awards: Dedicated to Telling the Stories of the Omaha Bar Association

Two journalists have dedicated their careers to the importance of telling the stories of the legal community in Omaha.

Through their positions at The Daily Record, these two women have shaped the relationship between the Omaha Bar Association and the city’s daily legal newspaper, a relationship that stretches back to the beginning of both organizations in the late 1800s.

This year’s Omaha Bar Association Public Service Award honors The Daily Record publisher Lynda Henningsen and local news editor Lorraine Boyd.
