OBA Prepares To Transition Leadership Next Month

The annual Omaha Bar Association President’s Reception was held Tuesday, marking the up­coming transition to a new presi­dent and bar leadership.

OBA President Patrick Cooper welcomed incoming OBA President William Acosta-Trejo during brief remarks. Acosta-Trejo presented Cooper with a crystal gavel to thank him for his service to the organization.

Cooper discussed the values of the OBA that came out of a stra­tegic planning process, and he highlighted the importance of pro­moting a sense of community, col­legiality and mutual support in the Omaha legal profession.

Women’s Center for Advancement: Extraordinary Women to be Recognized at Annual WCA Luncheon

The Women’s Center for Advancement will recognize 10 area women at its upcoming Tribute to Women fundraising luncheon, scheduled for June 13 in Omaha.

Elizabeth Powers, the WCA’s director of marketing and public relations, said the women who are selected for recognition are doing amazing things to help women in the community be safe and strong.

“They are breaking glass ceil­ings,” Powers said. “They’re trail­blazers. They’re fearless.”

Omaha Ranks 2nd Best in U.S. Behind Honolulu

The Omaha metropolitan area is a close second behind Honolulu among small cities, according to a ranking by a national business strat­egy and marketing firm.

This is the second year that Omaha has trailed the Hawaiian municipality among cities with a population under 1 million in the report by Resonance Consultancy.

Flood, Disaster Victims Can Request a New Property Assessment Under LB 512

Lincoln – The Nebraska Department of Revenue, Property Assessment Division released a new form Wednesday to request an ad­justment to an assessed valuation as a result of significant property dam­age from a disastrous event like a flood.

Ricketts Announces 41 Appointments to Boards and Commissions

Lincoln – Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts announced recent appointments that he has made to fill Nebraska’s boards and commissions.

The following appointees are unpaid and are not subject to confirmation by the Legislature:

• Nebraska Aeronautics Commission: Diana Smith of Beatrice.

• Capitol Environs Commission: Heidi Cuca of Lincoln.

• Conveyance Advisory Committee: Greg Anglim of La Vista and Matthew Murphy of Omaha.

• Dairy Industry Development Board: Todd D. Tuls of Columbus.

DHHS Selects St. Francis Ministries as Child Welfare Contractor for Omaha Metro

Lincoln – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services announced Tuesday that it selected a proposal from Saint Francis Ministries, which currently pro­vides child welfare services to youth and families in parts of Nebraska, to provide ongoing case management services in the Eastern Service Area, comprised of Douglas and Sarpy counties. 

The five-year proposal is for approximately $196 million and includes the option of two ad­ditional years, according to a DHHS news release.

Moberly Named UNL’s Interim Vice Chancellor

The leadership of the University of Nebraska College of Law is adjusting to the appointment of its dean to fill-in after a top university official left for a new job.

Richard Moberly, dean of the Nebraska College of Law, assumed the role of interim executive vice chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Saturday. He replaces Donde Plowman, who left Nebraska to become the chancellor of the University of Tennessee.

Omaha Halts Acceptance of Pothole Claims

The City of Omaha has returned to its long-standing damage claims policy for vehicle damaged caused by potholes.

In mid-March, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert authorized the pay­ment of claims for vehicle dam­age caused by potholes, provided claims met specific criteria. That temporary exception has ended.

Historically, the City of Omaha has not paid claims for vehi­cle damage, as allowed by the Political Subdivisions Tort Claims Act, according to a city news re­lease.
