11 Workers, 1 Patient At Lincoln Regional Center Have COVID-19

Eleven employees and one patient have tested positive for the coronavirus at the state-run psychiatric hospital in Lincoln.

Officials with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said they expect to confirm more cases as testing continues with patients and staff at the Lincoln Regional Center.

Federal Court Releases Report on Resuming Jury Trials

Attorneys are getter a clearer picture of how trials will resume following Independence Day in the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska after an ad hoc committee’s recommendations were released Monday evening.

More Prison Workers Test Positive for Coronavirus

More Nebraska prison employees have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing to 14 the total number of employees in the state’s 10 prison facilities who’ve tested positive for the virus.

Ricketts Concerned COVID-19 Will Flare Again With Protests

Lincoln – Nebraska could see another flare-up of COVID-19 cases because of the demonstrations over the death of George Floyd, but state officials concluded that allowing protesters to peacefully vent was more important than concerns about the pandemic, Gov. Pete Ricketts said last Monday.

Nebraska Receives About $10.8B in Total Federal Relief

Nebraska received the equivalent of a month of gross domestic product in federal coronavirus relief so far, according to a tally by the Governor’s Office.

The state has received roughly $10.8 billion from relief programs, as of May 19, and economic impact payments, as of May 22. For comparison, the state’s GDP is between $114 billion and $120 billion.

Ricketts Makes Relief Funds Contingent on Opening Courthouses

Gov. Pete Ricketts is telling counties to reopen their courthouses and offices to the public on a nonappointment basis – “basically, business as usual” – by June 15 if they want coronavirus relief funding.

Counties failing to meet that deadline won’t be eligable for reimbursements from the federal CARES Act, Ricketts announced at a news conference.

Be Safe Nebraska Asks Businesses to Make Virus Pledge

An initiative aimed to promoting the safety of Nebraska companies, employees and customers was launched earlier this month.

Be Safe Nebraska is a project of the National Safety Council’s Nebraska Chapter in collaboration with the Greater Omaha Chamber, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The initiative asks companies to pledge to adopt best safety practices.

Iowa Allows Evictions, Large Gatherings to Resume

Iowa City, Iowa – Gov. Kim Reynolds moved last week to lift a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures and allow large gatherings to resume.

Casinos, outdoor amphitheaters, amusement parks, bowling alleys, arcades, race tracks, skating rinks and outdoor playgrounds can reopen today.

Roberts Says Pandemic Teaches Humility, Compassion

Washington – Chief Justice John Roberts told graduating seniors at his son’s high school that the coronavirus has “pierced our illusion of certainty and control” and he counseled the students to make their way with humility, compassion and courage in a world turned upside down.
