Nebraska Receives About $10.8B in Total Federal Relief
Nebraska received the equivalent of a month of gross domestic product in federal coronavirus relief so far, according to a tally by the Governor’s Office.
The state has received roughly $10.8 billion from relief programs, as of May 19, and economic impact payments, as of May 22. For comparison, the state’s GDP is between $114 billion and $120 billion.
The Governor’s Office said that the biggest funding source, at $6.4 billion, has been the Paycheck Protection Program. Nebraska received among the most per capita from the program, in part because the state’s community banks helped small businesses receive approval.
Nebraska has also received the equivalent of three years’ worth of unemployment claims over the last two months. Federal funding has provided extra benefits and paid to increase staffing at the Nebraska Department of Labor.
About $1.6 billion in economic impact payments were made to Nebraskans – those are the one-time checks or direct deposits of $1,200 per individual tax filer, plus $500 per dependent minor.
