More Prison Workers Test Positive for Coronavirus
More Nebraska prison employees have tested positive for COVID-19, bringing to 14 the total number of employees in the state’s 10 prison facilities who’ve tested positive for the virus.
The two new cases are those of staff members employed at the state prison at Tecumseh, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said in a news release late Sunday. The release said both staffers are self-isolating at home.
Additionally, officials say a third Douglas County Corrections employee has tested positive for COVID-19 as the number of virus cases continues to rise in the state.
The ill corrections officer is recovering at home, said Corrections Director Mike Myers. The two other officers who contracted the virus have recovered and returned to work. Myers said the new case appears to have been contracted in the community and isn’t related to the earlier cases.
Douglas County issued a news release last Saturday saying that a case of coronavirus reported for a corrections officer May 26 was not COVID-19. That officer was hospitalized for an unrelated condition and has since been released. The officer tested negative for the novel coronavirus.
The state corrections department said it will notify those who work and live in the facility about the new cases. Officials also are directing anyone who may have had close contact with the infected staff members to self-quarantine until they are cleared by a medical provider.
