Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 01/13/2023 - 1:00am

Interventions designed to keep people safe can have hidden side effects. With an increased perception of safety, some people are more likely to take risks.

In Defense Of The 1970s, The ‘Decade That Taste Forgot’

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 01/12/2023 - 3:00am

As an expert in media and cultural studies, I once appeared in a television series about technology in the home during the last three decades of the 20th century.

I wanted to suggest that the UK in the 1970s should be remembered as a decade of relative social equality and contentment, where wage inequality was at its lowest (as the New Earnings Survey shows us).

Gov. Pillen Should Reveal To Nebraskans Who Is Applying For Sasse’s Senate Seat

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 01/11/2023 - 2:00am

Nebraskans are about to learn who Gov. Jim Pillen is selecting to replace Ben Sasse as one of the state’s two U.S. senators for the next two years.

But in a snub to citizens and the principle of open government, Pillen and his staff won’t even say who has applied for the job.

Two New Words Of The Year

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 01/10/2023 - 2:00am

The 2022 Word of the Year, as chosen by our lexicographic friends at the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is “gaslighting.” The dictionary bases its decision on the number of lookups the word gets, and for gaslighting that was an increase of 1,740%.

Talking Across The Political Aisle Isn’t A Cure-All – But It Does Help Reduce Hostility

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 01/09/2023 - 2:00am

Simmering tension in American politics came to a head two years ago, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election. The failed insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, resulted in several deaths and injuries to almost 150 police officers.

Beyond Section 230: A Pair Of Social Media Experts Describes How To Bring Transparency And Accountability To The Industry

Published by Nikki Palmer on Fri, 01/06/2023 - 3:00am

One of Elon Musk’s stated reasons for purchasing Twitter was to use the social media platform to defend the right to free speech. The ability to defend that right, or to abuse it, lies in a specific piece of legislation passed in 1996, at the pre-dawn of the modern age of social media.

The Rockingwell Sheriff Sale Judgment

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 01/05/2023 - 2:00am

I noticed an upcoming auction on Rockingwell Boulevard, which is a neighborhood I am pretty familiar with. A credit card company, whom had been awarded a judgment for an unpaid balance, had initiated foreclosure on a property in an attempt to recover their money owed. This particular property consisted of two parcels, one with a house and one with empty land.  As the owner’s name was on both, the credit card judgment stuck to both parcels. At first glance there was a large bank mortgage that ate up all the equity.

3 Reasons Local Climate Activism Is More Powerful Than People Realize

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 01/04/2023 - 2:00am

Global warming has increased the number of extreme weather events around the world by 400% since the 1980s. Countries know how to stop the damage from worsening: stop burning fossil fuels and shift to renewable energy, electrify transportation and industry, and reduce the carbon intensity of agriculture.

But none of this is happening fast enough to avoid warming on a catastrophic scale.

Your New Year’s Resolutions For 2023

Published by Nikki Palmer on Tue, 01/03/2023 - 3:00am

New Year’s resolutions are all about habits. Breaking some bad ones (smoking, drinking excessively, binging on fast food) and starting new ones (working out, eating more Brussels sprouts).

Businesses, like individuals, develop bad habits over time that need correction, while success in business over the long run usually means adopting good management habits and sticking with them year after year.
