As a first-time candidate in 2022, Aaron Hanson said one of his priorities as Douglas County sheriff was to increase the number of deputies on staff. When he took office in 2023, staffing was at about 130 deputies and civilians; today, Hanson manages an office of about 165 people.
Hanson defeated Democrat Greg Gonzalez by 1,093 votes in 2022. He faces Mark Martinez, a Democrat, in the Nov. 3 general election.

In a conversation with another about my work, I was asked just the other day: “Do you ever review restaurants that serve food that you usually avoid?” My answer was that I do my best to avoid places like those, unless I am invited to review them by the place itself, my boss, or as was the case when a national organization asked me to review a vegan restaurant. The perspective that I have gained over the years is that we all have different taste buds and life experiences which lead us down different paths, and that I should not enter into a place knowing I won’t leave happy.

During my quest to visit and review all of the restaurants along the streetcar route, I saw a post online from Noli’s restaurant in what I believe were the early days of September, where they expressed that they were going to temporarily shut down the restaurant due to a cooler breaking. The post also said that, due to the streetcar project severely reducing customer volume over the past few years, they have been unable to fix it.

It was a rainy Tuesday, but instead of the drear which comes with overcast skies and meandering droplets, it was blessed relief from the oppressive summer heat that had held on for far too long when I parked just near 11th and Farnam Streets. It was time yet again to try my best to advertise for the restaurants along the Streetcar Route, as I know many are struggling and do not deserve the poor hand dealt to them by either the City Council or whoever else has had a hand in the delays.

Sometimes solving a cold case means more than getting justice for the victim. Time isn't a friend for a case from 50 years ago. For investigators like Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Colin Driscoll, closing a case may simply mean identifying the victims.
In April 1973, a couple of boys playing in a secluded area near Waterloo stumbled upon two bodies, covered by blankets and pillows. Autopsies indicated they were likely shot and killed in January.
Investigators had little to go on to identify the two males, no fingerprints or dental work.

There was a time many years ago when I raced northwards in my Volkswagen Jetta, along the highways of the Great Plains to get away from the pain of a heart lanced. Omaha was too loud – or was it my mind? It was too loud, regardless; a cacophony of resplendent memories of a woman in a field of flowers. Those memories turned rancor. Hours north turned into a dozen west; roads carved down like a knife into risen dough were set between the rolling hills of vast northern grasslands.

"Rome didn’t know it fell. One day, the guy who was supposed to repair the roads just didn’t show up.” It is an old adage, but it is a good reminder that constant taxes, maintenance, and repairs are important for shared infrastructure. It is, however, entirely frustrating in Omaha to drive around downtown, or anywhere along Farnam Street. Too many good, local businesses have had their revenue impacted by the insane levels of construction on Omaha’s roads.

As skyscrapers rise above downtown Omaha and streetcar construction continues, commercial development projects can be found throughout the Omaha Metro.
Omaha's construction industry has seen tremendous growth in recent years, with the $1 billion expansion of Eppley Airfield, the $400 million streetcar project, and the $600 million Mutual of Omaha corporate headquarters tower downtown. Other projects have led to a boom in commercial development.
JE Dunn has become a major player in Omaha's construction market over the last 16 years.

As Nebraska's state government faces revenue shortfalls and budget constraints, the use of tax incentives for economic development may need to be examined, state senators said during the 37th Annual Commercial Real Estate Summit.
Tax incentives were part of a panel discussion focusing on the conference's theme of "Create Solutions" and featured Omaha Senators Brad von Gillern and Tony Sorrentino, Lincoln Senator Eliot Bostar, developer Jason Lanoha and Heath Mello, chief executive of Greater Omaha Chamber.

It should be prefaced that before arriving at the restaurant, it was a completely ordinary day. The Midwestern sun did not lecture me too harshly, nor were the children I had just worked with any sort of trouble beyond what was usual. As such, I was not too tired, nor was my stomach demanding food. It was perfect for an honest review of a new restaurant. Well, except I did not do my research and went to Shiki right after my job with children and wore my work shirt and shorts with my beat-up “play tag with me Mr. Austin” shoes.
