DHHS Shares Tips to Identify, Report Elder Abuse

Lincoln – As many as 1 in 10 older Americans experience elder abuse, neglect or exploitation.

In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services aims to bring heightened awareness to the mis­treatment of older adults.

“Elder abuse is a major issue that often goes unreported and unaddressed,” Dr. Matthew Van Patton, director of the Division of Medicaid and Long-Term Care, said in a release. “We all have a part to play in recognizing the signs of abuse and doing everything we can to prevent it.”

Sarpy County, Nebraska Medicine Exploring Mental Health Center

For several months, Sarpy County government officials and representatives from the Sarpy County have been meeting with po­tential partners to help the county establish a mental health crisis sta­bilization center.

At this time, Sarpy County is ac­tively pursuing a partnership with Nebraska Medicine, according to a Wednesday news release.

“A partnership with Nebraska Medicine opens the possibility of locating directly on the Nebraska Medicine-Bellevue campus.” said Sarpy County Commissioner Jim Warren.

Nebraska Criminal Defense Association: Three Attorneys Recognized at Annual Seminar

La Vista – The Nebraska Defense Counsel Association recently presented its 2019 awards.

Dan Placzek, a partner at Smith Johnson Baack Placzek Allen Connick & Hansen, was named Defense Counsel of the Year.

Two senior partners at Baylor Evnen, Randall L. Goyette and Stephen S. Gealy, received the Master Emeritus Award.

Summit Features Top Counterintelligence Official

Ashland – The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, Greater Omaha Chamber and Nebraska Chamber of Commerce & Industry will bring William Evanina, the top counterin­telligence official for the U.S. gov­ernment, as the keynote speaker at the upcoming Federal Legislative Summit later this summer. 

The 11th Annual Federal Legislative Summit will take place on Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Strategic Air & Space Museum in Ashland. The event will feature an update from Nebraska’s Congressional delegation on federal issues facing the state in Washington D.C.

Pass to Class Hits 1.5M Riders

In parternship with Metro transit, Metropolitan Community College’s Pass to Class has surpassed 1.5 mil­lion bus rides.

The milestone comes at a time when the college is extending the program to students in English as a Second Language noncredit classes, according to an MCC news release.

Pass to Class encourages rider­ship by offering a free bus pass for travel to and from MCC locations or for other education-related pur­poses.

Sally Hopley, coordinator of Sustainable Practices at MCC, said the program addresses issues of ac­cess and affordability.

Do Space Hosts Talk on Renewable Energy

The Metropolitan Community College at Do Space program at 7205 Dodge St. will host a free, public talk about renewable energy on July 11, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Courtney Kennedy, alternative energy program manager at the OPPD, and Darren Dageforde, ex­ecutive director of utility and en­ergy optimization at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will discuss renewable energy and how Nebraskans can make a difference.

Reunified Families Gather for Celebratory Picnic

Juvenile justice professionals and advocates came together re­cently to celebrate the hard work and success of many area families who have been reunited.

The 10th annual Summer Family Picnic, held last Friday at the Omaha Children’s Museum, was put on by CASA for Douglas County, the Separate Juvenile Court of Douglas County and oth­ers who work alongside families that brought their children home after a separation.

Murnan Spent Her 43-Year Career Behind-the-Scenes at Creighton University School of Law

Sandy Murnan spent the past 43 years working at the Creighton University School of Law and is re­tiring today as the school’s associ­ate registrar.

Murnan put decades of work into admissions and records at the law school, making a career of support­ing faculty, staff and students as they fostered generations of aspir­ing attorneys and judges.

Despite staying at the school for nearly her entire professional career, Murnan never set out to be a university administrator. All she wanted at first was a job in Nebraska’s version of the big city.
