Feds Pause Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern Merger

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 06/02/2026 - 12:00am

OMAHA — The federal government on Thursday paused a proposed merger of two railroad behemoths, Nebraska staple Union Pacific and Georgia-based Norfolk Southern.

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board, an independent federal agency which regulates ground transportation and freight, requested more information about the future company.

The feds asked both companies for more details by July 27 about April’s amended application for the merger. The Surface Transportation Board must sign off on railroad combinations.

It’s Not Just High Gas Prices – Inflation Is Now Spreading Through The US Economy

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 06/02/2026 - 12:00am

Americans don’t need a press release to know that inflation is rising. Gasoline is above $4 per gallon amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and closure of the Strait of Hormuz, and the release of key price data on May 28, 2026, underscores why policymakers are worried these pressures could spread into the broader economy.

Major League Baseball owners made their long-expected salary cap proposal to the players’ association on Thursday, a system the union has vowed never to accept, setting the sides on course for a confrontation that threatens the 2027 season and perhaps beyond.

Baseball owners hadn’t proposed a firm cap since 1994. Their effort prompted a 7 1/2-month strike that forced the cancellation of the World Series for the first time in 90 years.

More Megachurches Want To Be Your Alma Mater

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 06/02/2026 - 12:00am

In the heart of the Bible Belt, a small Methodist college graduated its final class in May 2024, shutting its doors after 168 years.

Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama, was a Christian private liberal arts school that counted among its graduates members of Congress, famous musicians, Pulitzer Prize winners and the former executive editor of The New York Times. Yet it had been unable to endure years of financial losses.

OPINION: Strong Hospitals Start With Strong Leaders

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 05/26/2026 - 12:00am

Healthcare leadership has never been easy. But in Nebraska today, particularly in rural and community hospitals, it has become significantly more complex.

For more than 15 years, I’ve worked with emerging healthcare leaders through the Nebraska Hospital Association’s Leadership Institute. Over that time, I’ve watched hundreds of healthcare professionals from across the state navigate this transition — representing hospitals large and small, urban and rural alike.

Ella Ricker was sitting in her elementary school orchestra class when she first considered a career in teaching. Her orchestra teachers at Lincoln Public Schools made learning to play music so fun, she wanted to share that joy with others.

As a teacher, Ricker said, seeing her students excited to play their instruments and perform in school concerts was her favorite part of the job. But it was also only one part of a growing list of responsibilities in a profession in which she said a good work-life balance had become unattainable.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — When Americans want to show their patriotism, they often don red, white and blue clothing, or sometimes even drape themselves in the U.S. flag. But if you truly want to embody the country’s zeitgeist, just slip on your favorite blue jeans. You probably already own at least one pair, just like almost everyone else you know.

Trump Will Ease Refrigerant Rule In A Bid To Address Surging Grocery Costs

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 05/26/2026 - 12:00am

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is set to loosen a federal rule that requires grocery stores and air-conditioning companies to reduce greenhouse gases used in cooling equipment, in what officials say is a push to lower grocery costs.

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Lee Zeldin, said the Biden-era rule imposes costly restrictions that limit the type of refrigerants U.S. businesses and families can use.

Who Can Defend Us?

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 05/19/2026 - 12:00am

The Daily Record newspaper recently obtained exclusive (parody) transcripts from a private press conference held on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. The conference was held in front of the display case, which holds the Declaration of Independence. Conservative Representative Toddy ‘Christian’ Coalburner was forced to share the podium with Democratic Representative Sara ‘Immigrant’ Heartbleeder. Standing before them was but one reporter, Tony ‘lil guy’ Everyman (who wore one of those baggy tan vests with tons of full pockets to carry whatever it is reporters carry on themselves).
