Amid Renewable Energy Backlash, Some Nebraska Communities Are Making Millions

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 08/18/2026 - 12:00am
Platteview Solar, owned by AES Corp., operates a solar panel farm in Saunders County. The county received about $266,000 in nameplate capacity tax revenue in 2025.

This story is made possible through a partnership between Flatwater Free Press and Grist, a nonprofit environmental media organization.

After about 10 years of discussions and a failed bond issue, then-Superintendent Amy Shane finally got to see a much-needed expansion at the O’Neill Public School District’s aging junior-senior high school. Expanded classrooms, state-of-the-art science labs, a new gym.

The difference-maker that helped push the $13.2 million project from proposal to reality: taxes on renewable energy developments.

Incompetence, Promotions and Culture

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 08/18/2026 - 12:00am

You know, the absolute craziest idea that I have come across in recent memory is the “Peter Principle." Raymond Hull and Laurence Peter jointly authored the book of the same name based on Laurence’s research, published in 1969. Generally, it is a theorem that says eventually everyone in a hierarchy will be promoted into a role for which they are incompetent, and there they shall remain. Such is an example:

Trump Announces $180M For Mining Education As Administration Recommits To Coal

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 08/18/2026 - 12:00am

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Friday the federal government will fund $180 million in grants for mining schools across the country as part of his administration’s goal of rebuilding the U.S. coal industry.

The grants will include $100 million from the Department of Energy spread across the 14 accredited mining schools in the U.S., while the Department of Defense will dedicate just over $80 million for three major schools of mining and metallurgy: the Colorado School of Mines, the South Dakota School of Mines and Johns Hopkins University.

Small Businesses At The Gateways To America’s National Parks Face 4 Big Risks – Including Changing Boundaries And Extreme Weather

A record 332 million people visited U.S. national parks in 2024, followed by roughly 323 million in 2025.

That’s a lot of love for national parks and lands. You might think that such big numbers of visitors automatically create windfalls for the towns and businesses that serve them. The National Park Service calls towns or counties within roughly 60 miles (about 100 kilometers) of a park boundary “gateway” communities. Gateway businesses operate in those jurisdictions.

The SBH Review: Shredders Is A Trip Down Memory Lane. This Trip Involves Pizza.

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 08/11/2026 - 12:00am
Shredders, the new Omaha restaurant from award-winning chef Dave Utterback, is serving up pizzas that will remind you of being a kid in the late 20th century – with ingredients that will satisfy your modern adult cravings, says food critic Sarah Baker Hansen.

Sometimes, the nostalgia a bite of food conjures is as strong as the flavor of the food itself.

Though that might seem kind of deep for a pizza place called “Shredders,” named after the shiny, evil ninja in the 1990s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” cartoon, I think it fits.

Doctor Ego And A Circus In Washington

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 08/11/2026 - 12:00am

Firstly, regardless of what was seen or known as needed for the civic health of the population of the United States, the handling of the COVID pandemic by our government and the media was mildly atrocious – and the media and government continue to fail the citizens. That isn’t to say that back in 2020 there wasn’t a great and express need to quarantine the spread of the virus, and that people didn’t ‘‘try their best,” so to speak.

Today’s Children Could Prosper In Tomorrow’s Shortage Of Young Workers

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 08/11/2026 - 12:00am

Today’s children could be the first generation since the 1970s to do better than their parents as young workers become more sought after and well paid. They may even see a surplus of housing to make their lives even easier after recent shortages.

An abundance of young workers will turn into an undersupply by 2040, with better pay and a surplus of housing, demographers predict. Immigration and artificial intelligence are wild cards, and young workers will still be saddled with taxes to support aging boomers for a while.

The Typical Gig Worker Is Changing – And Struggling More Than Ever To Make Ends Meet

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 08/11/2026 - 12:00am

The next time you call an Uber ride or order food delivery with an app, there’s a good chance that the gig worker you meet is getting government benefits.

In 2025, companies such as DoorDash, Lyft and Uber had the most workers receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits among all major employers, according to a new Government Accountability Office report. This marks a major shift from 2020, when an earlier GAO survey found that Walmart and McDonald’s took the top spots for SNAP recipients.

Small Town Bar Raises A Glass To The Village Of Hordville

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 08/04/2026 - 12:00am
Cars and trucks line the street outside of the Banana Rams bar in Hordville. In eight years, the small business has grown in regional popularity and routinely attracts a crowd of locals from throughout Hamilton County.

On a warm, rainy July afternoon in the village of Hordville, a farmer, banker and local mayor all walk into a bar.

These friends and staples of the community gather over a round of beers at a large table near the center of the bar. Around them, the walls painted with maroons, greens and yellows provide a splash of color as hearty laughs bounce off lofted ceilings. Historic village photos adorn the bar with reminders of Hordville’s past.

Well ahead of the evening rush, the bar is milling with people, mostly area farmers who came in out of the rain.
