The latest public art installation by the South Omaha Mural Project was recently unveiled.

Community leaders gathered at Donohue’s Irish Pub at 33rd and L streets on June 22 to mark the completion of an Irish mural

“Inspired by the history of the Irish who came to South Omaha, and using classical Irish art and iconography, the South Omaha Irish Mural tells the illuminated story of the progress of the Irish community in Nebraska,” a news release from Douglas County Commissioner Jim Cavanaugh said. “This mural depicts South Omaha Irish achievements, from the founding of the state and the building of the transcontinental railroad and Union Stockyards, to the contributions of the Irish to the civic life, arts, religion and governance of our community.”

The project also recently completed a Mayan Mural on the west side of Kubat Pharmacy, located at 24th and N streets.

Those two murals are joined by the South Omaha themed “Magic City” at 24th and N streets, the Lithuanian “Sieninis Paveikslas” at the Lithuanain Bakery at 5217 S. 33rd Ave., the Mexican “Del Futuro Al Pasado” on the El Mercado Building at 4907 S. 25th St., the Polish “Nostrovia” at Dinkers Bar at 2368 S. 29th St., the Croatian “Zajednica” at 36th and W streets and the 150th anniversary of Nebraska mural “Nebraska Odyssey” at 36th and Q streets.

The mural at Donohue’s was spearheaded by Rebecca Van Ornam and Quin Slovek. Find more on the Irish mural online at facebook.com/irishmuralproject.
