Amy Schuchman is the second of two new judges for the Separate Juvenile Court of Douglas County to be selected by Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts.

Schuchman fills one of the vacancies created by the recent retirement of Douglas F. Johnson and the resignation of Elizabeth G. Crnkovich. Her appointment was announced last Friday.

Ricketts previously appointed Mary “Peg” Stevens to the bench. There were 16 candidates who applied for the pair of vacancies.

Schuchman, 43, has been a Douglas County deputy county attorney since 2004. She has more than 12 years of experience in the Juvenile Division of the Douglas County Attorney’s Office. Most recently, she served on the Child Victim/Sexual Assault Unit and acted as the office’s Board of Mental Health Coverage attorney.

In addition, she worked in private practice for about two years at the firm of Roberts, Adams & Jewell and clerked in the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, both in California.

She earned her J.D. from Whitter Law School in Costa Mesa, California. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri.

Schuchman is a member of the Omaha and Nebraska bar associations. She’s been a member of the Douglas County 1184 Investigative Team since September 2018.

She is also a past president of the Douglas County CASA board and a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association Leadership Academy Class of 2013-14. She worked with members of Nebraska Appleseed, child welfare and four Native American tribes in Nebraska to implement the Nebraska Indian Child Welfare Act in 2016.

Schuchman serves as a mentor for TeamMates, a CASA of Sarpy County volunteer and has worked in various other volunteer roles, including for Sen. Deb Fischer’s re-election campaign and as a youth soccer and softball coach.
