Pillen Visits Cruiser Of McAcy, State Trooper Who Died In Line Of Duty
OMAHA — Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Feb. 27 for the funeral of Nebraska State Patrol trooper Kyle McAcy, who died Monday while responding to a wreck along Interstate 80 between Ashland and Greenwood.
McAcy, who was based in Omaha’s Troop A of the Patrol, was struck by a snowplow near mile marker 424 and died at the scene. The 10-year Patrol veteran, with ties to the Millard area in southwest Omaha, leaves behind a fiancé, parents and siblings.
Pillen and Nebraska First Lady Suzanne Pillen joined community members in stopping by the Troop A headquarters parking lot near 108th and Q Streets in Omaha to leave flowers on the windshield of McAcy’s Patrol cruiser, which was parked in his memory.
People can send cards to McAcy and his family at the Troop A Headquarters, 4411 S. 108th Street, Omaha, NE 68137.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 27 at Liberty First Credit Union Arena in Ralston, 7300 Q St., and will be open to the public. The Patrol encouraged people to join a law enforcement procession leading McAcy and his family to the funeral. The Patrol will release the route at a later date.
The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office is handling the fatal crash investigation, but Patrol officials have described the incident as a terrible accident common in bad weather. Officials said he was struck by a plow moving in reverse to get moving.
Col. John Bolduc, superintendent of the Patrol, said during a news conference on Tuesday that he had spoken with the Nebraska Department of Transportation about the “tragedy” and that the plow driver was “hurting” about what had happened.
Jerry Smith, 51, of Scottsbluff had been the last Patrol trooper killed in the line of duty. The U.S. Army veteran was killed on June 20, 2019, in a crash near Bridgeport in western Nebraska. He had been driving when a wreck cascaded into his lane of traffic.
