Offutt Air Force Base Plans Events for 9/11's 20th Anniversary

Published by Derek Noehren on Sat, 09/11/2021 - 1:00am

Members of Team Offutt and their dependents walk in honor of 9/11 victims Aug. 7, 2019, at the Offutt Air Force Base parade grounds. About 200 individuals participated in the remembrance walk/run event held to commemorate all those who died due to the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. This year will mark the 20th anniversary. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on U.S. soil. It is a time to remember the courage of so many firefighters, paramedics, New York policemen and New York’s Port Authority Officers that sacrificed their lives to save others, and a time to honor the memory of all those who perished in Pennsylvania, the Pentagon and the Twin Towers.

It is a time to show reverence for all the lives lost in just 102 minutes of the clock. As Americans, we still remember and we must never forget.

Most recall that day and what they were doing. Many born after 1995 may not remember because they were too young or not even born yet. Some have learned about the tragic events of 9/11 through the reminders televised and the memorial ceremonies that take place every year throughout fire departments, military bases and cities nationwide.

As a country, we lost so much and shed tears for so many. Every year these celebrations of life and death help us to remember and to mourn.

Once again, the Offutt Fire Department is sponsoring the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and will be participating at the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb being held Sept. 11 at Werner Park in Papillion.

“Members of Offutt are participating in the stair climb and posting the colors. There will be a bell ringing after each person completes their climb,” said David Eblin, Offutt AFB fire chief. “You don’t have to be a fire department member to participate.”

The 55th Force Support Squadron is also holding an Offutt Remembrance Run on Sept. 11 at the Offutt parade grounds.

“In 2019, the Offutt Field House staff wanted to do something to honor the individuals who were affected by the terrorist attacks. Everyone decided that hosting an annual remembrance run commemorating the incidents surrounding the 9/11 attacks, helps keep the event in our memories,” said Sarah Stahl, 55th FSS fitness program manager. “This September is the 20th anniversary and we must never forget what occurred.”

Participants walk or run four laps around the track. Activities will include a moment of silence from the Offutt Chapel, the presentation of the colors by the Honor Guard, and the national anthem by the Heartland of America Band. So, whether we walk, run, climb stairs or remain at home and reflect on the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001, let all of us remember, and honor all that was lost in 102 minutes of the clock.
