LAW DAY: OBA Hoping to Return to In-Person Gatherings

Published by Scott Stewart on Tue, 05/04/2021 - 4:00am

Golfers could be heard listening to music, such as Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face,” enjoying each other’s company and saying soft prayers for their golf balls to stay on the fairway at Champions Run Golf Course during the 2019 Omaha Bar Association Field Day, July 22, 2019. The OBA hopes to resume in-person events soon, with Field Day 2021 planned as the first major event since the coronavirus pandemic. (Scott Stewart/Daily Record)

The next major Omaha Bar Association event will still feature zooming — on golf carts, not the videoconferencing software that’s flourished during the coronavirus pandemic.

The OBA plans to start transitioning back to in-person events after today’s virtual Law Day luncheon, said OBA Executive Director Dave Sommers.

The organization has already held a Young Lawyers Division gathering at Top Golf, and a couple other YLD events may happen in the coming weeks, but Field Day will be the first major in-person event in over a year.

Field Day is currently scheduled for July 19 at Champions Run Golf Course.

“Then it becomes crazy in the fall,” Sommers said.

The OBA Fall Kickoff is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 9, although Sommers cautioned that the details for that event are still being ironed out. Sommers said the Medical Legal Dinner with the Metro Omaha Medical Society is being planned, too.

Also still in the planning stages are the annual Memorial Program, the Walk Through the Courts and welcome event for new attorneys, and the Bench Bar Briefing.

The 15th annual Creighton Law/OBA Seminar on Professionalism and Ethics is on the agenda for Sept. 10, albeit as a virtual livestreamed event. The third annual Diversity & Inclusion Seminar that OBA offers jointly with the Nebraska Paralegal Association is scheduled for Nov. 10.

NePA is currently planning for its fall seminar Sept. 22–23 as an in-person event at the Scott Conference Center in Omaha.

The Nebraska State Bar Association is planning an in-person Annual Meeting after conducting virtual sessions last year. That event is scheduled to begin Oct. 13 in La Vista.

The NSBA and Nebraska Lawyers Foundation has their 18th Annual Greater Nebraska Golf Scramble set for June 18. The 17th annual Barristers’ Ball will be held Aug. 7.

A black-tie-optional membership celebration will kick off the Nebraska Association of Trial Attorneys’ annual meeting Sept. 23-24.
