LINCOLN  — A novel centered on a young Army nurse who served in Vietnam and the latest in a “romantasy” series topped the list of popular fiction titles checked out at public libraries of Nebraska’s capital city.

The City of Lincoln’s public library system Thursday announced its most popular titles in various categories for 2025. Here’s a glimpse of what adults mostly read in the fiction category:

“The Women” by Kristin Hannah – 3,688 checkouts

“Onyx Storm” by Rebecca Yarros – 2,950 checkouts

“James” by Percival Everett – 2,514 checkouts

“Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt – 2,159 checkouts

“Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros – 2,093 checkouts

Library representatives of the state’s second most populous city said that last year residents borrowed more than 3 million items from the eight Lincoln city libraries and the Lied Bookmobile.

“This year’s lists highlight a wide range of genres and authors, while also showing longtime favorites that continue to resonate strongly with our patrons,” said Rebecca Aracena, support services coordinator.

The library system has compiled Top 10 checkout lists for other categories, including adult nonfiction, young adult series, authors and movies.

Among list leaders: James Patterson, author; Wicked Part I, movies; Sonic Superstars, video games; “That’s Not My Name” by Megan Lally, young adult stand-alone, and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” for juvenile series.

In addition to books, e-books and audiobooks, Lincoln public libraries also loans ukuleles, guitars, video games and movies and provides free access to dozens of databases.
