NOTICE OF REGULAR BOARD MEETING

 

The Board of Education of the Gretna Public Schools, Gretna, Nebraska, will hold a regular meeting on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at the Gretna Public Schools - Administration Building located at 11717 South 216th Street, Gretna, Nebraska, in the Board of Education Meeting Room. An agenda for the meeting, which shall be kept continually current, is readily available for public inspection on our website and at the Superintendent’s office during normal business hours.

REGULAR BOARD MEETING

 

SECTION I - Opening Procedures

Notice of the meeting was given in advance by the publication and/or posting in accordance with the Board approved method for giving notice of meetings. Notice of this meeting was published in the public notices section of the June 10, 2025 edition of The Daily Record and on their website as well as on the district website. Notice of this meeting was given in advance to all members of the Board of Education. The Secretary of the Board maintains a list of the news media requesting notification of meetings and advance notification to the listed media of the time and place of the meeting and the subjects to be discussed at this meeting was provided. Availability of the agenda was communicated in the publicized notice and a current copy of the Agenda was maintained as stated in the publicized notice. All proceedings of the Board of Education, except as may be hereinafter noted, were taken while the convened meeting was open to the attendance of the public.

 

1.1   Call Meeting to Order - Rick Hollendieck  called the meeting to order.

 

1.2   Roll Call - Board members present were: Kyle Janssen, Mark Hauptman, Dawn Stock, Greg Beach, Rick Hollendieck and Blake Turpen. Others present were: Travis Lightle, Andrew Rinaldi, Russ Olsen, Mike Sortino, Shawn Hoppes, Andy Boone, Caroline Foresman and guests.

 

1.3   Pledge of Allegiance - The board recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

1.4   Approval of Minutes - Motion by Kyle Janssen, seconded by Blake Turpen, to approve the minutes of June 05, 2025. A roll call vote was taken - Blake Turpen, yes; Kyle Janssen, yes; Rick Hollendieck, yes; Greg Beach, yes; Mark Hauptman, yes; and Dawn Stock, yes.

      Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent 0.

 

1.5   Recognition of Visitors - Ken Paulison addressed the board to encourage increased participation in the foreign exchange program. Colby Coash, representing the Nebraska Association of School Boards (NASB), addressed the board to provide a legislative update and to express appreciation for the board’s active engagement and involvement.

 

1.6   PUBLIC HEARING ON POLICY 6113- ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION DEVICES AND CELL PHONES - Motion by Motion by Dawn Stock, seconded by Greg Beach to open the public hearing on Policy 6113 regarding electronic communication devices and cell phones. A roll call vote was taken - Kyle Janssen, yes; Rick Hollendieck, yes; Blake Turpen, yes; Mark Hauptman, yes; Dawn Stock, yes; and Greg Beach, yes.

      Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent 0.

 

Motion by Mark Hauptman, seconded by Kyle Janssen to close the hearing on Policy 6113. A roll call vote was taken - Dawn Stock, yes; Greg Beach, yes; Mark Hauptman, yes; Blake Turpen, yes; Kyle Janssen, yes; and Rick Hollendieck, yes.

Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent

SECTION II - Matters Requiring Board Action

2.1   Approval of Bills (SP 2) - Motion by Mark Hauptman, seconded by Blake Turpen to approve the bills as presented. A roll call vote was taken - Rick Hollendieck, yes; Kyle Janssen, yes; Blake Turpen, yes; Dawn Stock, yes; Mark Hauptman, yes; and Greg Beach, yes.

      Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent 0.

 

2.2   Approval of Resignations and Contracts (SP 4) - We have no resignations or contracts at this time.

 

2.3   Consider Approval of Policies (SP 2) - Motion by Blake Turpen, seconded by Greg Beach to approve the revision of Policy 5007 to increase the number of foreign exchange students to 3 students at each building, but no duplicate students from the same country. A roll call vote was taken - Mark Hauptman, yes; Kyle Janssen, yes; Greg Beach, yes; Rick Hollendieck, yes; Blake Turpen, yes; and Dawn Stock, yes.

      Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent 0.

 

Motion by Blake Turpen, seconded by Dawn Stock to approve the policy updates. A roll call vote was taken - Blake Turpen, yes; Kyle Janssen, yes; Rick Hollendieck, yes; Greg Beach, yes; Mark Hauptman, yes; and Dawn Stock, yes.

Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent 0.

 

2.4   Consider Approval of Handbooks for the 2025-2026 (SP 1,4) - Motion by Greg Beach, seconded by Blake Turpen for second round approval of the 2025-2026 handbooks. A roll call vote was taken - Greg Beach, yes; Dawn Stock, yes; Blake Turpen, yes; Mark Hauptman, yes; Rick Hollendieck, yes, and Kyle Janssen, yes.

      Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent 0.

 

2.5   Consider Approval of Mechanical Design Services for Gretna Middle School (SP 2) - Motion by Rick Hollendieck, seconded by Mark Hauptman that the Board of Education of this School District approves the selection of Morrisey Engineering to provide professional mechanical design services for a potential project at the Gretna Middle School, and that the Board further approves and adopts the attached RESOLUTION. A roll call vote was taken - Blake Turpen, yes; Kyle Janssen, yes; Rick Hollendieck, yes; Greg Beach, yes; Mark Hauptman, yes; and Dawn Stock, yes.

      Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent 0.

 

SECTION III – Reports

3.1   TeamMates of Gretna Report (SP 2) - Terry Dostal provided an update on the TeamMates mentoring program within  the district.

 

3.2   Combined Budget Report (SP 2) - Russ Olsen presented the final report on the combined budget, summarizing key financial data.

 

SECTION IV - Announcements and Dates

4.1   Adjournment - Motion by Mark Hauptman, seconded by Blake Turpen, to adjourn the meeting. A roll call vote was taken - Kyle Janssen, yes; Rick Hollendieck, yes; Blake Turpen, yes; Mark Hauptman, yes; Dawn Stock, yes; and Greg Beach, yes.

      Motion carried. Yeas 6; Nays 0; Absent 0.

These minutes remain unofficial until officially ratified and signed by the Board of Education Secretary.

 

RESOLUTION BE IT RESOLVED by Sarpy County School District No. 77-0037, a/k/a Gretna Public Schools, a Class III School District under the laws and statutes of the State of Nebraska, at this regular meeting of its Board of Education, (“GPS”), that Morrisey Engineering is selected and approved to provide mechanical design services for a potential project at the Gretna Middle School;

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the President of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools, or a designee of either, should be and is hereby delegated the authority and is authorized to negotiate a services agreement with the above firm, on terms and conditions determined to be in the best interest of the school district, upon negotiation of a final services agreement, is delegated the authority and is authorized and directed to sign, execute, and deliver such services agreement, and any amendments, change orders, change directives, work orders, or other documents necessary to complete the services agreement, and is delegated the authority and is authorized and directed to retain any necessary professionals for assistance, to pay the agreement amount, service and material costs, and all other costs and expenses, and to take or cause to be taken all other action necessary or appropriate to complete the project or in the best interest of the School District.
