A grand jury was convened in the Douglas County District Court to review 15 in-custody deaths and deaths that occurred during police actions.

The grand jury investigated the deaths of Michael Truscott, Terrance Newsome, Jessica Wolfe, Robert Jensen, Jesus Munoz, Carmichael Elya, Terry Hudson, Brittany Madson, Ryan Kortus, Calvin Strong, Domonique Allen, Bentley Bruckner, Trista Schaefer, Daniel Walton, and Kenneth Jones. Despite a consolidated process, the grand jury members inquired into each death individually last week, the court noted in a news release last Friday. On Friday, the grand jury completed its work and determined that there was no criminal conduct on the part of any individual in each of the cases. The Grand Jury returned a separate report of a no true bill for each of the following cases: In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Michael Truscott, MS 20-95; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Terrance Newsome; MS 20-96; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Jessica Wolfe, MS 20-97; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Robert Jensen, MS 20-98; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Jesus Munoz, MS 20-99; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Carmichael Elya, MS 20-100; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Terry Hudson, MS 20-101; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Brittany Madson, MS 102; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Ryan Kortus, MS 20-103; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Calvin Strong, MS 20-104; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Domonique Allen, MS 20-105; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Bentley Bruckner, MS 20-106; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Trista Schaefer, MS 20-128; In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Daniel Walton; MS 20 21-7; and In The Matter of The Grand Jury re: Kenneth Jones, MS 21-13.

The reports were filed with the clerk of the district court. A transcript and corresponding exhibits for each case will be filed with the clerk when completed.

Regarding Bruckner’s death, the grand jury recommended that any inmate placed in isolation be given a full medical assessment prior to placement in isolation. Bruckner died of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to a summary of the grand jury’s report in the news release.

Presiding Judge Horacio Wheelock has discharged the grand jury, according to the news release.
