Finding A ‘Fur-Ever’ Home Takes Love, Time And Hope
Harbor of Hope Dog Rescue (HoH) is a nonprofit all-breed dog rescue that “provides a safe haven from life’s storms.” They offer a safe place for dogs that have gone through rough times, often physical or mental trauma, and give them a loving place to heal and grow until they can find a permanent home. They help these canines with vet care, training, healthy diets, and endless love so that they can feel safe and secure. In the words of Harbor of Hope, “We cannot stop the world from being cruel, but we can offer a safe, loving and restorative place where dogs are protected from the harshness of life and given a chance to recover and heal.”
Founded in 2019, they have helped over 400 dogs get adopted. As they do not have a central location, all adoptable canines are raised in foster homes until they are able to find ‘fur-ever’ homes. Their application process is very careful, involving vetting on current or previous pets; checking if the applicant is renting or a homeowner, and contacting any landlords for pet restrictions; receiving two personal references and a vet reference; and a home visit to make sure the prospective home is safe for pets. The entire process usually takes seven to ten days. “We do not adopt on a first come, first served basis. Instead, we try to find the family that is the best match for our dog,” explained HoH.
All of their dogs are fully vaccinated, micro-chipped, and spayed or neutered as needed. All adoptions take place in Omaha and are done in-person. They can take out-of-state applications as long as they are able to schedule a home visit, but they do not ship, transport, or deliver your pup. There is an adoption fee, however all proceeds go towards the care of the dogs in foster care.
HoH is always looking for volunteers! You can go to their website at harborofhopedogrescue.org/volunteer and fill out an application. They are looking for individuals who would be willing to help with fundraising, process applications, conduct home visits, provide transport for the pups to and from vets or events, event planners, photography, updating their social media, and help with their website. They are also always looking for new foster families for the dogs awaiting adoption.
