Sarpy County took its latest step in regional development Wednesday when Facebook announced it would expand its Papillion data center campus by 1 million square feet south into Springfield.
The social media powerhouse will add more than 500 acres of land in Springfield, expanding the campus across Capehart Road to the south of the existing data center in Papillion. Once complete, the entire campus will be approximately 3.6 million square feet.
The expansion is expected to cost about $400 million, and add about 100 permanent jobs to the site, bringing total permanent employment to around 300 people, according to a video announcement shared by Facebook.
Additionally, around 2,000 construction workers will be hired at the peak of the project.
“This is an exciting development in Facebook’s continued growth, and we are pleased to join them in celebrating their ongoing presence in Sarpy County,” Andrew Rainbolt, executive director of the Sarpy County Economic Development Corporation, said in a statement. “Their level of commitment to ourcommunity is unprecedented, and their ongoing support of this region’s local organizations has seen more than $2 million in donations.”
W. Todd Johnson, senior vice president of economic development at the Greater Omaha Chamber, offered the project praise.
“We are proud of the commitment Facebook has to communities, and commend everyone who will continue to work together to move this important development forward,” Johnson said.
Facebook first broke ground in Papillion in 2017, and the first four of eight planned buildings at the site are already completed and operational. The Springfield expansion expected to be finished sometime in 2024. Facebook said that the data center will be supported by 100% renewable energy.
Construction on the Papillion center began over two years ago, and it will continue into 2023.
Last year, Facebook announced that it would triple the size of the center from two buildings to six. In total, Facebook says this brings its total investment into the Nebraska project to nearly $1.5 billion.
To date, Facebook has donated over $2 million to local causes, including local school districts, according to an online Facebook video from the Sarpy County Data Center.
A video posted by the Sarpy Data Center highlights how the social media company has made investments in the local community.
One example highlighted in the video is Facebook reaching out to the Springfield Plattview Community Schools in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, providing hot spots for expanded internet capability, and one-to-one laptops for juniors and seniors.
Another portion of the video shows Papillion Mayor David Balck discussing a $50,000 donation for technology for the Papillion Landing Community Center.
