The City of Omaha is considering adding about 2,150 residents to its population with an annexation package that spans eight sanitary and improvement districts.
Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert is proposing the annexation of:
• Hillsborough Estates (SID 421),
• West Dodge Hills (SID 451),
• Grayhawk Two (SID 468),
• Manchester Ridge (SID 495),
• Elkhorn Highland Ridge (SID 502),
• West Dodge Pointe and adjacent area (SID 538),
• Pacific Street West aka Tuscan Ridge (SID 539) and
• West Hampton Park aka Lynbrook (SID 489).
A city news release states that the average property tax payment will reduce $504.93 per $100,000 in taxable valuation. Taxes would decline in all eight SIDs.
The SIDs already receive fire production and emergency medical service from Omaha, and the volume of 911 calls is low. They have 26 lane miles of streets, all of which are improved, and 5.6 acres of park land. None of the properties have greenbelt status.
The city expects to collect an estimated $43.5 million over the next decade if the annexations are approved, including $23.2 million in property taxes, $18 million in occupation taxes, $1.7 million in roadway funding and $600,000 in wheel tax, according to estimates.
Stothert called the annexation package “healthy growth” that would increase the city’s tax base and benefit the whole community.
“Strong and successful cities like Omaha continue to grow their populations, their economies and opportunities for business and family,” Stothert said in a release.
The Omaha Planning Board will take up the annexation package on June 3. The City Council plans a first reading on June 16, a public hearing on June 23 and a vote on July 14.
If approved, the annexations would become effective July 28.
An open house is tentatively scheduled for residents and business owners on June 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Saddlebrook Community Center, 14850 Laurel Ave. However, the open house will be canceled if directed health measures limiting public gatherings to a maximum of 10 persons is still in place at that time.
