A new study by Point2  — an organization focusing on real estate trends, and developing studies on local, national, and international housing markets — looked into the cities across America to find the best place for Gen Z’s to buy homes. Looking at the 100 largest cities across the country, they held them against 7 different factors to find the cities that would be most advantageous for young homebuyers, such as home price to income ratio; median sale price of homes between 2022-2023; the housing inventory in each city; how many homes were sold over listing price; how long they were on the market; and homeownership and unemployment rates.

Point2 found that across the entire country, the best city to buy a home in for young people is Fort Wayne, Indiana, scoring an 84 out of 100 on their metric score, with one of the best home price-to-income ratios as well as one of the lower period of time a house was sitting on the market.

Lincoln took 6th place, just behind Memphis, Tennessee. Lincoln had one of the lowest unemployment rates for people below the age of 25, and has over 12% of Gen Z who own a home.

Omaha, meanwhile, was at 36th, also boasting a low unemployment rate and decent percentage of Gen Z homeowners. Point2 was of the belief that buying a home in these two cities is more achievable for young adults, primarily due to home prices being around 7 times Gen Z’s median income.”

When it came to difficult places, 7 of the top 10 cities were found in California, with the worst being Fremont, CA with a score of 11 out of 100. Fremont, CA had a 70% of homes being sold over list price, and only 1.4% of Gen Z homeowners.
