I. Call Meeting to Order- Board President Allyson Slobotski called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. noting the meeting is governed by the Open Meetings Act, which is available on the south end of the room.  

 

II. Public Forum- Two members of the public were present to speak.  

 

III. Consent Agenda (Note: Items on the consent agenda are considered routine and will be enacted under one motion. There will be no separate discussion of these items at the meeting unless a Board Member requests an item removed from the agenda for separate action.)  Approval of Agenda, Approval of Minutes of the Monday, July 13, 2026 - Regular Meeting, Monday, July 13, 2026 -Special Hearing, Presentation of August Bills for Approval and Payment, Personnel: Resignation(s) and Hiring of Personnel.

VI. Unfinished Business

VI.A. Review Progress on Previously Approved Summer Maintenance/Transportation Purchases- The Board reviewed all previously approved projects and their progress:  District Concrete Repair, Completed.  Bennington Elementary- HVAC Replacement, In-Progress.  Pine Creek Elementary- Carpet Replacement, Completed.  

 

VII. New Business

VII.A. Discuss, Consider, and Take Action on District Purchases- The Building/Finance Committee met on August 3rd to discuss potential district purchases; District van, and High School Protective Netting and Canopy.  These bids were reviewed by the Building/Finance committee recommended approval of these purchases.

VII.B. Discussion on 2025-2026 Budget- The District’s fiscal year ends on August 31st. The Board was updated on where the District expects to end the school year within the General Fund.

 

VII.C. Review 2026-2027 Enrollment Projections- This was an informational item for the Board.   

 

VII.D. Discuss, Consider, and Take Action on the Name of the Second High School at BPS- Policy 902.50 governs the Board of Education’s ability to name schools within the district. After reviewing the available options, the committees concluded that Bennington South High School best aligns with these guiding principles for the following reasons: Provides a clear geographic identifier that will remain relevant as the district continues to grow, maintains a strong connection to the Bennington community and district identity, creates consistency with future district planning should additional schools be constructed, supports a unified district identity while allowing each high school to develop its own traditions, culture, and mascot.

VII.E. Discuss, Consider, and Take Action on the Grade Level Configuration for the Second High School- Based on historical transition practices among comparable districts, the opportunity to reduce enrollment pressure at Bennington High School, the desire to provide both schools with a strong foundation for academic and activity programming, and the ability to facilitate a smoother staffing transition, the recommendation is to open the new high school with students in grades 9 through 11 during the 2028-29 school year.

 

MOTION PASSED: Motion to approve opening the district’s second high school for the 2028-29 school year with students in grades 9 through 11, allowing the Class of 2029 to complete their senior year at Bennington High School, passed with a motion by Tim Dreessen and a second by Kara Neuverth.  Jeremy Dick: Yea, Tim Dreessen: Yea, Kara Neuverth: Yea, Joe Pick: Yea, Allyson Slobotski: Yea
