USDA’s Finalized Rule Could Boost Adoption Of Regenerative Farming Practices

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 07/16/2026 - 12:00am

Farmers growing corn and soybeans for biofuels can now quantify the carbon intensity of crops grown with certain regenerative agriculture practices, due to a recently finalized federal rule.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Regenerative Feedstock Rule will allow farmers to “capture new value” from agricultural practices like cover crops and reduced tillage, according to a news release from the department.

When Chuck Martens could no longer afford his rent, he came up with a solution. He negotiated with his landlords to swap his labor for a rent reduction. Now Martens does landscape work for his Omaha apartment complex. Seven days a week, he mows the grass, collects trash and wields a leaf blower. Hedge trimming is his favorite.

“It’s like you’re doing an ice sculpture, but with a trimmer instead of a chainsaw,” Martens, 77, said.

Feds Encourage Public Housing Authorities To Impose Work Rules, Time Limits

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 07/09/2026 - 12:00am

Dozens of public housing authorities, tribes, property owners and community groups have joined a new coalition organized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to promote work requirements and time limits for people who receive federal housing help.

HUD is currently finalizing a rule that would allow public housing authorities and property owners who participate in federal housing voucher programs to impose work requirements and time limits on work-ready adults, or working-age adults (younger than 62) who are not disabled.

OMAHA — Signage went up last week, heralding progress on a signature project of the Omaha Inland Port Authority.

The first phase of the port authority’s “innovation district” — an initiative seeded with a $30 million state grant — now has a home. It’s poised to sprout within a roughly 12-block area southeast of 30th Street and Ames Avenue, near one of the busiest intersections of one of Nebraska’s most disinvested communities.

OMAHA — Construction work is to start this week to transform a familiar parking lot along South Omaha’s historic business district into a multimillion-dollar “La Plaza de la Raza” park and tourism generator.

The action comes as the City of Omaha solidifies plans for what is believed to be the first city-owned public parking garage in the area. Alternative parking was needed to replace spots lost when new amenities rise on the plaza site, on the west side of the South 24th Street corridor at N Street.

TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albania’s rallies against a coastal development project have garnered global attention, both for their connection to U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and because of their curious mascot.

The luxury project has two components: a small resort on the uninhabited island of Sazan and a coastal development in the nearby Narta Lagoon area, which is a wildlife reserve frequented by wetland species including flamingos.

To Protect Its Drinking Water, This City Has To Appeal To The Oil Regulators That Put It At Risk

Brine spills sap moisture from land and create a hard, crusty surface that rainwater can't penetrate, preventing plants from taking root and often worsening erosion.

OMAHA — Carolyn Williamson’s thoughts rolled back to the glory days of the North Omaha historic business district, before the late 1960s riots when jazz clubs flourished and, she said, there seemed to be a grocery store on every street.

Williamson, 79, and husband Charles, 84, likened the neighborhood today to a food desert. They said they have to drive outside that traditional heart of Omaha’s African American community to buy their preferred fresh protein and produce.

A Man’s Word, Expectations

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 06/25/2026 - 12:00am

When your disappointment rises alongside your age, is it a sign of getting older? Does that mean you aged poorly? Or is it that an adult had set your expectations too high, and your now-elderly eyes have had time to adjust? I am thankful that, as a child, my conservative father never pressured me to think any certain way. Unlike teachers at school or classmates who would make light of what used to be conservative values, there was never any sort of presumption from my old man on what I should or shouldn't be.
