In Nursing Homes, Impoverished Live Final Days On Pennies

Published by Nikki Palmer on Thu, 03/23/2023 - 2:00am
Alex Morisey sits for a portrait in his room at a nursing home in Philadelphia, on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023. For U.S. nursing home residents receiving Medicaid, like Morisey, all income is garnished and the person is left to rely on a small subsidy known as a personal needs allowance. The federal government hasn’t changed the minimum rate, $30 monthly, since 1987. Pennsylvania’s allowance is $45. (Wong Maye-E / AP Photo)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — New pants to replace Alex Morisey's tattered khakis will have to wait. There's no cash left for sugar-free cookies either. Even at the month's start, the budget is so bare that Fixodent is a luxury. Now, halfway through it, things are so tight that even a Diet Pepsi is a stretch.

LINCOLN — Nebraska got a lot of publicity after it unveiled an edgy state tourism slogan in 2018: “Honestly, it’s not for everyone.”

As Tennessee, Others Target Drag Shows, Many Wonder: Why?

Published by Nikki Palmer on Mon, 03/06/2023 - 1:00am
Drag artist Vidalia Anne Gentry speaks during a news conference held by the Human Rights Campaign to draw attention to anti-drag bills in the Tennessee legislature, on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023 in Nashville, Tenn. Legislation went to Tennessee’s Republican governor, Thursday, March 2, that would ensure drag shows cannot take place in public or in front of children. Many other states have considered similar bills, but none have acted as fast as Tennessee. (John Amis / AP Images for Human Rights Campaign)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — "If I hadn't been a girl, I'd have been a drag queen."

Dolly Parton has uttered those words famously and often. But if she really were a drag queen, one of Tennessee's most famous daughters would likely be out of a job under legislation signed into law by Republican Gov. Bill Lee on Thursday.

Published by Nikki Palmer on Wed, 03/01/2023 - 4:00am
An exterior photo of Weeping Water Public Schools during a recent school day. The school’s 299 students attend classes in this building. This year, they switched to a four-day week after the school struggled to attract and retain teachers. “Smaller schools, we don’t have the financial resources to throw money at people to stay,” said Superintendent Kevin Reiman. “I just can’t compete with those types of things.” (Abiola Kosoko / Flatwater Free Press)

WEEPING WATER – Superintendent Kevin Reiman had a problem. He couldn’t find new teachers. He was lucky to get even a few applicants for jobs that used to bring in fifty resumes.

So, in spring 2022, Reiman took an idea to the school board of Weeping Water Public Schools.

What about a four-day school week?
