Brain Dump – A Serialized Sci-fi Drama: Part 7 - The Thrilling Finale!

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 06/10/2026 - 12:00am

Jenna blew out stunted breaths before she even opened her eyes. The stress of the week had been too much to bear, and she had given in to her friends’ demands to go out and drink herself to oblivion. Mission accomplished it would seem. Her head throbbed from every possible angle, and her mouth was bone dry from sleeping with it rather agape. Ironic, since she seemed to have formed a large pool of drool on her left shoulder. How had she even gotten home? She vaguely remembered protesting her friend Kara getting another round of shots. Had she then cheered later for the next round?

Brain Dump – A Serialized Sci-fi Drama: Part 6

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 06/03/2026 - 12:00am

The next morning found Jenna begrudgingly trudging to work for the first time. She already couldn’t wait for the day to be over, despite the bright and cheery morning Friday offered. She walked slowly down the sidewalk, iced coffee hanging at her side.

She shuffled through the security gate and was surprised to see Felicity waiting for her. She looked rather tense and motioned quickly for Jenna to meet her.

“What’s the matter?” Jenna asked as Felicity pulled her into the women’s restroom.

Brain Dump – A Serialized Sci-fi Drama: Part 5

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 05/27/2026 - 12:00am

Thursday afternoon bled into evening. Jenna had struggled to focus ever since her argument with Felicity. Mr. Ternal’s files were still on her computer. She moved on to another project to try to clear her head and make some semblance of progress, but the twisting knot in her stomach refused to relent. Felicity did at least apologize before she left, as had Jenna. But now she sat by herself in a slowly darkening office with absolutely no sense of closure. She let out a long sigh and decided to take Felicity’s parting advice to just leave it till tomorrow.

Brain Dump – A Serialized Sci-fi Drama: Part 4

It took the rest of the morning for Felicity to convince Jenna she wasn’t going to get fired.

“Jenna, seriously,” Felicity continued. “In my first recording session, I got tongue-tied and accidentally triggered a really important doctor to recall a childhood memory of some creepy clown at a circus.”

“Eww, really?” Jenna laughed.

“Yeah, just chill,” Felicity said. “But seriously, you’re gonna have to show me the footage of these supposed ‘convulsions’.”

“But I’m supposed to delete it, right?” Jenna asked.

Brain Dump – A Serialized Sci-fi Drama: Part 3

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Wed, 05/13/2026 - 12:00am

As Mr. Ternal settled back in the chair and finally seemed to relax, Jenna initiated the recording program. She noticed right away how much feedback Mr. Ternal’s sensors were providing. Her training told her that this meant he was either very alert, very nervous, extremely intelligent, or some combination of the three.

“Yeah, that tracks,” Jenna muttered to herself.

“I’m sorry?” Mr. Ternal responded.

“Ope! Sorry,” Jenna quickly replied. “Just adjusting some settings.”

Jenna rushed excitedly down the sidewalk. It was her first solo scan day, and she couldn’t wait to get to work. As she dashed past the long side of her building to get to the staff security entrance on the north side, her coffee and ice bounced around inside its plastic cup. She met Tony, the security guard, with a cheerful greeting, and hurried through the metal detector to the elevator beyond. She fought to slow her pace as she exited onto her floor, very aware of how fast her heart raced. She dumped her bag at her desk, booted her computer, and quickly logged into her account.

Jenna sighed. She was just settling into week three of her new job and the excitement of learning the computer system and other requirements had all but worn off. She looked around the office. The open work floor she sat in contained several banks of workstations. Little walls divided the cubicles for a sense of privacy, but if she stood up, she could see across the room. She was on the side opposite the bank of windows. She actually preferred it because when the day was warm and sunny, those window desks were sweltering.

Movie Night – Project Hail Mary

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 04/23/2026 - 12:00am

It’s been a few weeks since Project Hail Mary came out, so I feel less awful about the copious spoilers ahead. But it’s really difficult to discuss or describe Ryan Gosling’s intergalactic science fiction dramedy without getting into what makes it intergalactic or science fiction or dramedy. So here goes.

Right at the top, I will say we can’t talk about Project Hail Mary without talking about my previously adored ‘Interstellar’ from 2014. It’s almost exactly the same plot with a few important deviations.

United in Fun – American Heroes Park

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 04/16/2026 - 12:00am

It was one of this year’s many rather-mild-late-winter-days, and me and the fam were meeting some friends at Bellevue’s riverside American Heroes Park. On one hand, I had heard very good things about the park and its features. On the other hand, it’s a playground – how great could it be? No one told me it was a super-awesome-over-the-top-something-for-everyone playground with the power to bridge the ever-widening socio-economic divides which threaten the very patchwork fabric of modern America. Okay, that last part might have been inferred by my own personal observation, but still.

Designer Deep Dive – Bellevue’s New Waterpark

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Thu, 04/09/2026 - 12:00am

The local Bellevue channels are awash with the news and developments of our new waterpark. Like everything else online, public opinion is varied and extreme. I, for one, am quite excited. Living just a couple of minutes away, my girls are already planning their first birthdays following the opening, not to mention the year-round fun afforded by the park’s main enclosure. Now, for obvious reasons, the public is mostly focused on promotional renderings and official updates from the city.
