Emily Withnall caught COVID-19 from her teenager in July 2020. In the more than two years since, the 40-year-old has suffered from debilitating fatigue, spinal pain and heart palpitations. In addition to her primary care doctor, she regularly sees a cardiologist and says her acupuncturist and craniosacral therapy help relieve her pain and the trouble she has focusing.

Yet it seems like no one wants to talk about what I see as the root cause of America’s economic malaise – work under contemporary capitalism is fundamentally flawed.

Nov. 8, 2022— Nebraska business owners are celebrating the passage of Initiative 433, saying raising the minimum wage will boost consumer spending, strengthen Nebraska’s workforce, and bolster local businesses. Initiative 433 will gradually raise the state minimum wage by $1.50 a year until it reaches $15 in 2026.

Nontraditional workers—often referred to as contingent, gig, alternative, or independent workers—generally do not have access to employer-provided benefits such as a retirement plan or health insurance. Workers without retirement savings plans risk entering retirement without adequate savings.

The Covid-19 Pandemic changed the work landscape drastically, with many industries having to restructure or risk dying off completely. This led many employees to suddenly find their jobs becoming partially or fully remote and forcing everyone to have to adapt. As we reach the end of the pandemic, many, especially those in the real estate development market as was shown at this year’s CRE Summit, are of the opinion that we will move back into the office and return to the way things once were.

Simply believing you have a diverse workforce isn’t enough for businesses today; there needs to be conversations about color. The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce’s conference on opportunity, diversity, and equity discussed this year how implementing this in businesses is crucial to the effectiveness of a company.

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Environmental Trust has scheduled a trio of “listening sessions” — beginning Tuesday — to gather ideas on whether changes are needed in the process of awarding grants that benefit the state’s environment.
The Trust, which grants about $20 million a year in state lottery proceeds after scoring them, has come under fire in recent years for some grant decisions.

In 2014, Nebraska voters passed Initiative 425 by a margin of almost 20 points (59.47% to 40.53%). This initiative raised Nebraska’s minimum wage above the federal minimum wage, going from $7.25 to $8 on Jan, 1, 2015, and then to $9 on Jan. 1, 2016.
