Healthcare across rural America is in crisis.

In the past two decades, close to 200 rural hospitals have closed – 44 since 2020 alone. Hundreds more have cut much-needed health services, such as maternity care and chemotherapy treatments. Nearly half are losing money on their day-to-day operations, putting them at risk of closure.

Most regions in rural America are designated as areas that lack sufficient healthcare providers.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Like millions of others, Natasha Jacka went stir-crazy during a COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, until it dawned on her that there might be great opportunity in having nowhere to go.

Jacka used the pandemic and the suspension of her studies at an agricultural college to plant her own vineyard at her family home in South Africa. It was a way to fast forward her dream of becoming a winemaker by bringing it, literally, within reach.

Nothing in the wine world moves too fast, though, and it was four years before the first harvest and vintage.

Police Use Of Artificial Intelligence Grows As Rules Lag Behind

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 06/30/2026 - 12:00am

Hundreds of people fill a downtown street for a protest, waving signs and chanting as they march past businesses and government buildings. Overhead, a police drone records video of the crowd. Nearby traffic cameras and license plate readers capture faces, vehicles and movements along the route.

With artificial intelligence, experts say, hours of footage can be analyzed in minutes, making it easier for police to track or target a participant long after the demonstration ends.

Nebraska Among States That Have Eased Child Labor Laws Ahead Of Summer Hiring Season

Published by maggie@omahadai... on Tue, 06/30/2026 - 12:00am

For some teenagers across the country, the summer is the first opportunity to gain work experience for their nascent resume.

In a handful of states, however, teens who find jobs will find fewer protections under child labor laws. Four states — Indiana, Nebraska, Washington and West Virginia — enacted laws this year that weaken child labor protections, according to the Economic Policy Institute, a nonprofit think tank. In all, 13 states had bills seeking to weaken those protections; some are still under consideration.

Rich Slobotski used to have Miller Lite, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Glacial Till Cider and Samuel Adams on tap at his Omaha bar. Now, he doesn’t sell any of them.

Thirsty customers at The Underwood Bar have frequently asked Slobotski when their favorite beers and ciders will be back behind the counter. But the bar is one of a handful of local spots that are purposefully choosing not to carry some of their biggest sellers.

The reason? They are supporting union workers who are on strike after the company they work for was bought out and the new owners demanded contract changes.

LINCOLN — As the sun rises this month on the “Great American State Fair” in Washington, D.C., for the nation’s 250th birthday, various Nebraska businesses and moments will be among those represented.

Nebraska is one of dozens of states and territories where leaders are designing pavilions to go up on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for a 16-day honor beginning June 25. Some states have pulled out of designing exhibits, some citing fiscal concerns, but Pillen and leaders from some of the largest Nebraska businesses said Monday they’re excited to show off.
