Former ABA President Remembered As Open Government Advocate

The American Bar Association announced Tuesday that former as­sociation president Talbot “Sandy” D’Alemberte passed away Monday at age 85.

D’Alemberte served as ABA president in 1991-92. He was con­sidered one of the leading advocates for human and civil rights around the world, a pioneer of dispute res­olution, a constitutional expert and a champion of open government, according to an ABA news release.

ABA Recognizes Media, Arts for Fostering Public Understanding Of United States Legal System

The American Bar Association announced its selections last week for the 2019 Silver Gavel Awards for Media and the Arts, recogniz­ing the best work that fosters the American public’s understanding of law and the legal system. 

The work being recognized this year focuses the 19th Amendment, untested rape kits, cash-advance companies, bad cops and campaign contributions.

Voting Open on Finalists for ABA Prize for Legal Fiction

Readers looking for legally ori­ented selections for their summer reading need look no further than the finalists for this year’s Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction.

The ABA Journal and the University of Alabama Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. School of Law an­nounced three finalists last week: “The Boat People” by Sharon Bala, “Class Action” by Steven B. Frank and “The Widows of Malabar Hill” by Sujata Massey.
