There’s a new sheriff in town.

A 29-year veteran of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will take the place of recently resigned Sheriff Tim Dunning through the end of the current term in 2022.

Tom Wheeler assumed his new position at the beginning of the month after being appointed by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners following Dunning’s resignation.

Sheriff is an elected position, but county board members fill the role when an incumbent leaves office before finishing a term. In an emotional appearance at a Nov. 10 board meeting, Dunning thanked the county commissioners for their cooperation as he asked for approval of Wheeler, whom he recommended to complete his term.

“You’ve been a great board to work with,” Dunning said. “You know, I’ve had issues here and there, just like you’ve had issues with me here and there, but overall, it’s been a great experience and I thank you for your cooperation.”

Board members echoed his sentiments.

“I want to commend you on a stellar career of public service,” County Commissioner Jim Cavanaugh said. “Your contribution to the community is unmatched. What you have done for public safety and law enforcement here will stand the test of time.”

The board unanimously voted to appoint Wheeler to serve until the 2022 midterms. Wheeler has been chief deputy since 2013 and has been at the sheriff’s office since 1992.

Wheeler brings a strong background of education and experience to the position. He earned a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and he graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2007.

Wheeler told The Daily Record that his main goal for the two-year term is to finish up projects.

“My goals are to continue the initiatives started by Sheriff Dunning,” Wheeler said, “specifically, the implementation of body worn cameras and earning international reaccreditation for the department.”

As of now, Wheeler does not plan on running for the office in 2022.
