The Nebraska State Bar Foundation recently announced the eight schools participating in the 2020 “We the People” finals.

Omaha Burke High School will join Johnson Brock High School in Johnson, Logan View High School in Hooper and Holdrege High School in Holdrege in traveling to Lincoln. They will face off against Lincoln North Star, Lincoln Southeast, Lincoln East and Lincoln Southwest high schools.

The contest will be Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, at the University of Nebraska College of Law.

The “We the People” contest invites high school classes that use a curriculum from the Center for Civic Education that explores the U.S. Constitution and promotes civic competence and responsibility to form teams and compete in simulated hearings before community members.

The winner of the state contest will advance to represent Nebraska at the national We the People finals in April in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The students also will visit various historic sites and meet with members of Congress and other dignitaries.

Additional Nebraska State Bar Foundation law-related education programs include mock trial, Law Day and Constitution Day. A new program, Kid Voting – Nebraska ABC – will invite K-12 students to participate in mock elections.
