Judge Julie Schumacher was selected by Gov. Kim Reynolds last week to serve on the Iowa Court of Appeals.

Schumacher, a district judge in northwest Iowa, will serve on the state’s appellate court that hears and decides appeals from district courts across Iowa.

She replaces retired Iowa Court of Appeals Chief Judge Gayle Nelson Vogel of Spirit Lake.

Schumacherg is a 1993 graduate of the Creighton University School of Law. She earned her bachelor’s degree in 1990 from the University of South Dakota.

Upon graduating Creighton, she went into private practice in Denison, Iowa, first at Engelhart Law Office for two years and then at the Mundt, Franck & Schumacher Law Firm for 18 years.

Schumacher practiced in the areas of civil litigation, family law, adoption, real estate, taxation, probate, education law and criminal law. She was an assistant city attorney for Denison for 18 years and a Crawford County prosecutor for about four years.

A Schleswig, Iowa, resident, the 52-year-old was named a district associate judge in 2012 by former Gov. Terry Branstad. She became a district court judge in 2017.

Schumacher currently serves in Iowa Judicial District 3B, which is based in Sioux City. The division of the district court that Schumacher serves includes Sioux, Plymouth, Woodbury, Ida, Monona and Crawford counties.
