Posting Information: Notice published in the Daily Record on May 10, 2024. Notice of meeting posted on the District website. Agendas posted at all Bennington Public School buildings three days prior to the meeting date.

I. Call Meeting to Order- President Allyson Slobotski called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M., noting the Open Meetings Act is posted on the south wall of the Board Room.
II. Public Forum- Two members of the general public were present to speak.
III. Consent Agenda (Note: Items on the consent agenda are considered routine and will be enacted under one motion. There will be no separate discussion of these items at the meeting unless a Board Member requests an item removed from the agenda for separate action.)

May 2024 Personnel Notes: Certificated Staff Hire: Kathryn Assmann, .5 ELL and .5 middle school world language teacher at Bennington South, DeAndra Dirkschneider, elementary teacher at Pine Creek, Holly Kush, elementary teacher at Pine Creek, Julie Dixon, special education teacher at Bennington South, Bethany Redlinger, 6th grade teacher at Bennington South, Support Staff Hire: Carissa Johnson, elementary secretary at Heritage. Certificated Staff Resignations: Kaylee Brenner, Brooke Boyd, Megan O’Dell, Susan Allen is retiring as an elementary teacher at Heritage. She has been with the district since August 16, 1999. Classified Staff Resignations: Gay Copeland, Stephanie Pulverenti, DeAndra Dirkschneider, Mary Cupps, Brook Tesmer, Linda White is retiring as a paraprofessional. She has been with the district since 2011, Janet Briko, Animika Rai, Lori Brayton.

VII.A. Discuss, Consider, and Take Action on Summer Maintenance/District Purchases - The Building and Finance Committee unanimously recommended the following be approved for 2023-24 summer maintenance and district purchases: Bennington High School- roof repair $541,133, Heritage- concrete repair, $68,982, Bennington Middle School- concrete repair, $13,944, District- modular, TBD.
MOTION PASSED: Motion to approve of all summer maintenance as presented including providing authority to the Building/Finance Committee to purchase modular classrooms as needed, passed with a motion by Steve Shannon and a second by Kristi Ryan. VII.B. Discuss and Consider Preschool, Elementary, Middle School and High School Handbook Revisions- Any revisions based on discussion will be provided again in June prior to asking for final approval.
VII.C. Discuss, Consider, and Take Action on 9-12 English Language Arts Textbook Adoption- HMH Into Literature Textbooks - $265,144, AP Courses - $23,249, AP English Language and Composition selected Portable Literature: Reading, Reacting, Writing by Cengage, AP English Literature and Composition selected American Literature and Rhetoric by Bedford/St. Martin’s, Journalism and Professional Communications - $0, elected not to purchase instructional materials during this cycle, estimated total cost, $288,393. This is an 8-year adoption paid out of the General Fund. The next purchase would be in 2031-32.

VII.D. Discuss, Consider, and Take Action on Preschool Textbook Adoption- Creative Curriculum – estimated total cost- $89,614. This would be an 8-year preschool adoption paid out of the General Fund. The next purchase would be in 2031-32.

VII.E. Discuss, Consider and Take all Necessary Action on 2024 Farm Lease Agreement for School District Property Located at 180th Street and Military Road- The District published and issued a request for proposals for interested and qualified agricultural producers seeking to submit the proposals for entering into a farm lease on the property during the 2024 growing season.
MOTION PASSED: Motion that the Board of Education of this School District approves the farm lease and security agreement for the District-owned property generally located at N. 180th Street and Military Road by and between the School District, as landlord, and Aaron Schmidt, as tenant and who had submitted the proposal for the highest rental amount, such lease in the form on file with official School District records and as presented at this meeting or with such changes as are deemed necessary and in the best interest of the School District and approved by the Superintendent of Schools, and further delegates authority to and authorizes and directs the President of the Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools, or other designee for the School District, to sign, execute, and deliver the lease, to determine whether to exercise the option to renew or terminate the lease, and to take or cause to be taken all other action necessary or appropriate to manage and administer the lease during the term of the agreement, passed with a motion by Allyson Slobotski and a second by Jeremy Dick. VII.F. Executive Session to Discuss Pending Litigation and Personnel Issues -
MOTION PASSED: Motion to enter closed session at 7:56 p.m. for the purpose of holding a strategy session regarding pending litigation as an executive session is clearly necessary for the protection of the public interest, passed with a motion by Steve Shannon and a second by Kristi Ryan. MOTION PASSED: Motion to enter closed session at 8:32 p.m. for the purpose of discussing personnel issues to protect the public interest and the reputation of any individuals involved, passed with a motion by Allyson Slobotski and a second by Steve Shannon.
