1.      Call Meeting to Order - This regular meeting of the Plattsmouth Community Schools Board of Education is called to order on Monday, September 9, 2024 at 6:00 PM in the Plattsmouth Community Schools Administration Center Boardroom at 1912 Old Hwy. 34, Plattsmouth, NE.

 

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 PM

 

2.      Acknowledge Open Meetings Law posted on the wall in the boardroom.

 

3.      Publication of Meeting - Notice of the meeting was published in the Sept. 9, 2024 edition of The Daily Record and posted on Sept. 6, 2024, in the display case outside the administration center, at the Plattsmouth location of the U.S. Postal Service, and on the district website at www.pcsd.org.

Motion by Winters and second by Siemonsma. Motion passed 7-0.

 

8.      Public Forum: Reception of Delegates - A time limit of three minutes will be set for individual speakers on a given topic. A total time limit of thirty minutes will be set for all speakers on a given topic, with an effort to provide equal time for pros, cons, and neutral opinions. While the public forum is an opportunity for members of the public to speak during the meeting, there will not be back-and-forth discussions between members of the public and Board of Education members.

 

No one addressed the Board.

 

9.      Early Childhood/Head Start Report

Juli Beck addressed the board for an update regarding the Early Childhood Center. The school’s name is getting updated to Cass County Head Start Preschool. She went over new Head Start program standards that came out in August. Information regarding a new grant being written was provided. A timeline for implementing these changes was explained.

 

10.    Operations Committee report

Winters provided an update regarding the recent committee meeting. He talked about the water leak at the concession stand, the sprinkler system at the Middle School, and changes to the Middle School football field. A new High School sign has been installed. Water issues in the buildings were addressed. The internet issues at the Early Childhood Center were discussed. Handicap equipment and a special needs van are in talks about being purchased.

 

11.    Finance Committee Report

Siemonsma provided an update regarding the recent committee meeting. There is a meeting on Monday, September 23, 2024, for important information regarding finances and the budget.

 

12.    Committee on American Civics Report

Shuey provided an update regarding the recent committee meeting. He talked about the sevenyear curriculum cycle. NWEA state testing results are coming out soon. Preschool enrollment to  keep kids held back in preschool is on stand-by unless PECC has more room. Discussed school colors and uniforms.

 

13.    Negotiations Committee Report

No report was given at this time.

 

14.    Recess (approximately 5-10 minutes) at the discretion of the President

The class of 2029 won first place in Parade Float in the main parade.

High Academic Achievement  and Professional Learning Communities (PLC)

School got off to a great start with our Back to School Night, Freshman Day, and Academy Kickoff Day. It has been a very smooth start to the school year. I appreciate the way our teachers and staff came back ready to start.

 

MAP testing has been completed.

 

Teachers spent September 6, 2024 reviewing data in departments and as a staff. The data will be reviewed to help guide instruction and develop interventions.

 

Students and staff enjoyed an assembly put on by the Thunderbirds. The pilots spoke about their journey to becoming a part of the Thunderbirds and encouraged students to follow their dreams and don’t give up.

 

Students and Staff have had a Lockdown drill and a Fire Drill.

 

We held our first Positive Assembly on August 30. We use these to celebrate the accomplishments and awards of students and staff.

Career Academies Board Report

The Academy Core Leaders organized and led another successful Freshman Day on August 14, 2024. This day included activities to become acquainted with their Advisory, school tours, iPad check out, student panel discussions, a pep rally, Activity Fair and running a shortened class schedule. Freshmen students and parents have expressed their appreciation for this opportunity to welcome the Freshmen to PHS.

 

August 15, 2024 was Academy Kick-Off Day for all students and staff. All students have been provided with a Career Academy shirt and were requested to wear it for this day of activities. New Staff was introduced in a Welcome Assembly that included the Band and Spirit Squad. Each Academy participated in year three of the “Be Kind 4 Life” program facilitated by TeamConcepts. This year a Service Learning Activity was included in the day at the suggestion of PHS staff. Each Academy participated in tasks to further prepare our outdoor facilities for fall events. Mulch was supplied by Greenlife Gardens. Academy Meetings were also held to review school policies and procedures and to remind students about social and emotional support available with our School Social Worker and other resources including CloseGap and See Something, Say Something.

 

JAG Report

In the month of August, Plattsmouth High School 9-10 JAG students focused on completing the Welcome to JAG project-based learning module, familiarizing themselves with the JAG routine, and establishing routines related not only to JAG but also to Plattsmouth High School or, for the sophomores, new Plattsmouth High School rules. Students participated in team building activities such as “Common Three”, “Sit Down If..”, and “Guess the Words Rule”. In these activities students had the opportunity to learn about each other’s interests and unite over their similarities. Students also wrote a letter to their 12th grade selves which were sealed and will be given to the student when they begin 12th grade.

 

Students also started their first PBL project where the sophomores had the option of creating a personal logo, a digital video, a “4 Seasons” poster, or a timeline to represent themselves, their lives, and what they consider important to them. The freshmen had the option of a personal logo or a timeline. All four options were discussed with the sophomores and how each can be used to effectively highlight themselves and represent their uniqueness. The same was done with the freshmen as to the personal logo and timeline. This PBL will be completed during the first week of September 2024.

 

In the month of August, Plattsmouth High School 11-12 JAG students focused on building a positive classroom environment, developing routines and procedures, and completing the Welcome to JAG project-based learning module. Student’s enjoyed completing team building activities like Would You Rather? and Three of a Kind. In these activities students had the opportunity to learn about each other’s interests and unite over their similarities. Students were also challenged in a communication activity called Descriptive Drawing. In this exercise students practiced their verbal communication and listening skills in order to draw a picture that their partner described to them. The goal is to work as a team so the artist can recreate the image without looking at it.

 

Students also started their first PBL project where they will create a personal logo to represent themselves. After discussing how companies utilize logos to represent their business goals, and sometimes even convey hidden messages (think FedEx), students began drafting a logo that highlighted their interests and passions. Once their logos are finalized, students will present their logos to the class and highlight the elements within the logo that are significant to them.

 

Athletic/Activities Report

Fall activities are underway! Football plays at Buena Vista on 8/30 and at Elkhorn on 9/5. We have two Thursday night games this year. Softball is sitting at 3-4. Volleyball lost to Gross in their opener and we host the tournament on the 31st. Girls golf won their opening dual against Auburn. The number of participants for each activity:

Organization Development and Capacity

The 2024-2025 school year will focus on the following points:

1.  Continuing the growth of Wall-to-Wall Academies and expanding internship opportunities.

2.  Concentrating on a culture of respect, inclusion, encouragement and celebration of students and staff.

3.  Advancing civic engagement.

 

Plattsmouth High School staff continually seek to improve upon the processes of our curriculum and academy teams. That effort is focused upon data interpretation, identifying student needs, and responding with collective efficacy.

On August 31, 2024, the District was issued a close out letter from the Nebraska Department of Education indicating that no further action is needed for the 2023-2024 Indicator 13 monitoring process.

 

Journey to Inclusion Grant

The District applied for and was awarded grant funding in the amount of $12,713 to assist with inclusive practices for the 2024-2025 school year. Grant funds will be used to support professional development.

1.      Professional Development Update - Friday, September 6, 2024 -

On Friday, September 6, 2024, PES classroom teachers dedicated time to reviewing NWEA MAP student assessment results. As part of their grade-level and job-alike teams, staff collaborated to develop goals and strategies centered on student achievement and growth. These goals and strategies will be revisited throughout the school year, allowing teachers to make instructional decisions and adjustments based on students’ progress. We look forward to sharing our student assessment data with you soon. Additionally, teachers had the opportunity to plan and prepare for small group instruction and literacy-based centers.

 

Our special education teachers were provided professional development from ESU 3, as well as assistive technology training. We will continue to provide differentiated Professional Development opportunities for our special education staff members.

 

Additionally, our specials teachers worked on cross curricular planning and preparation.

 

2.      Plattsmouth Elementary Goals and Fall NWEA MAP Assessment Results:

Our K-4 NWEA MAP student assessment results are completed. The goals and objectives identified based on assessment results will be reviewed during Professional Learning Community/Team Meetings/Professional Development throughout the course of the school year.

 

We will continue to focus on Reading and Math as part of the continuous improvement process, yet we have developed specific goals and strategies related to Reading (Grades K, 2, 3, 4) and Math (Grade 1) as a building. This will provide opportunity for our staff to make instructional decisions and adjustments based on how students are progressing on the goals identified for each grade level. Through analysis of student assessment results, our identified goal for each grade level is to strive for 80% of our students to be at or above proficiency according to the NWEA MAP assessment by Spring 2025.

 

As students continue to take the NWEA MAP assessment (Winter and Spring), a sharing of student performance and growth will be shared with the Plattsmouth Board of Education.
