No College World Series Hits Omaha Hard

Rich Tokheim’s sports apparel shop is right across the street from TD Ameritrade Park. More than half his annual revenue comes in the 11 or 12 days of the College World Series each June.

“We’re here,” he said, “because of the College World Series. It’s just so many people.”

Lincoln – Nebraska’s corrections department has taken aggressive, early steps to prevent the spread of the coronavirus inside the state’s prisons, and so far the efforts appear to be working, the state corrections director said last Friday amid growing safety concerns being raised by prisoner advocates.

IMF: Global Economy Will Suffer Worst Year Since Depression

Washington – Beaten down by the coronavirus outbreak, the world economy in 2020 will suffer its worst year since the Great Depression of the 1930s, the International Monetary Fund says in its latest forecast.

Iowa Governor Wants Focus on Individual, Not State, Response

Ricketts Expands Some Restrictions Statewide, Closing Down All Salons

Lincoln – Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts ordered the closure last Thursday of all salons, tattoo parlors and strip clubs and announced the cancellation of organized group sports until May 31, expanding an order that was already in place in the state’s biggest cities.

Nebraska Jobless Claims Reach Record for Third Straight Week

Lincoln – Nebraska saw record unemployment yet again last week as the new coronavirus forced more businesses to lay off workers, according to new data release last Thursday.

The state received 26,788 new unemployment claims during the week that ended April 4, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The new numbers mark the third straight week with a record-setting increase.

Four People Test Positive for COVID-19 at YRTC Kearney

Kearney – A third staff member and three residents at Nebraska’s Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment Center in Kearney have now tested positive for the coronavirus, state health officials reported.
