Preparations Underway For Upcoming Primary Election

The upcoming primary election is drawing a high amount of interest, and demanding a lot of last-minute preparations, in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Local officials are offering several reminders to voters and are encouraging participation by mail instead of in-person voting.

NU Researchers Develop Strategy to Share Ventilators

One of the most highly publicized problems during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a potential shortage of ventilators, the lifesaving machines that help people breathe.

Current estimates suggest about 5% of COVID-19 patients develop acute respiratory distress syndrome, or ARDS, a condition that mandates ventilator use.

Coronavirus Sends Rural Bankers Survey Index to New Low

An overwhelming majority of bankers in rural parts of 10 Plains and Western states expect the pandemic to push their local areas into recession, according to a new survey released last Thursday.

Nebraska’s Unemployment Rate Hits 4.2% in March

Lincoln – Nebraska’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 4.2% in March, according to new data released last Friday.

The previous unemployment rate in February was 2.9%, according to the Nebraska Department of Labor.

Virus Found in Iowa State Prison

The Iowa prison system has confirmed its first case of an inmate testing positive for the novel coronavirus, officials said Saturday, as the number of cases and deaths statewide continues to rise.

FEMA Coordinates Deliveries of Supplies, Other Resources

Kansas City, Mo. – For over the past month, FEMA and other federal agencies have been supporting the White House Coronavirus Task Force as part of a whole of government response to fight COVID-19 pandemic and protect the public.

Masks Donated to Firefighters, DCHC Workers to Use at Home

Last Monday, a volunteer group called Nebraska Masks4Medics donated more than 1,000 cloth masks to the Omaha Firefighters Union and the Douglas County Health Center. Brickway Brewery and Distillery also donated a supply of hand sanitizer to both entities.

AG Warns of Deceptive Claims For COVID-19 Antibody Testing

Lincoln – Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson said his office sent warning letters to health care providers and other businesses making deceptive or scientifically unsupported claims about their ability to test for COVID-19.

DCHD Recommending Masks

The Douglas County Health Department is reminding everyone that now is the time to be a good neighbor. When you make a trip for the necessities, wear a mask and consider asking an elderly neighbor if you can pick up something they need. That’s how you protect seniors and help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

“There’s never been a better time to be a good neighbor,” Health Director Dr. Adi Pour said.
