The U.S. Olympic swim trials will return to Omaha next year in advance of the rescheduled 2021 Olympic summer games.
The swim trials will be held at the CHI Health Center Omaha on June 13-20, which will partially coincide with the College World Series, which has its opening ceremonies planned for June 18.
“This is really good news for our community,” Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said. “This is something we desperately needed right now.”
The event has an estimated financial impact of $74 million – directly helping the city’s hard-hit tourism sector. It will serve to help “kickstart our community back up again,” Stothert said.
“This is good news for us, and we’re very, very grateful that they made the decision to come back to Omaha in 2021,” she said.
The Omaha swim trials are the sole qualifier for pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team for the Tokyo games in July 2021. It will remain an eight-day, 15-session event. Ticket holders for the 2020 postponed event can either request a reissuance of tickets or can receive a refund within six months of the announcement.
USA Swimming Chief Operating Officer Mike Unger thanked the Omaha Sports Commission and the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, among other partners, in moving the event to the new dates.
“Fans can expect to witness the same incredible level of competition and entertainment throughout this highly-anticipated event,” Unger said in a statement.
The Omaha Convention & Visitors Bureau says the return of the swim trials is “a beacon of hope” for Omaha’s tourism industry.
“During a time when hotels, restaurants, attractions and businesses are suffering tremendously, this announcement is a huge catalyst of hope for our city,” said Keith Backsen, Visit Omaha’s executive director.
Overlapping with the CWS will create some logistical challenges.
“But once again, our city rallied together and demonstrated its resilience,” Backsen said.
The 2021 contest will be the fourth time Omaha has hosted the swim trials. Omaha will also host the Olympic Curling Trials again, which means the city will be the first ever to host trials for both the summer and winter games in the same calendar year.
