State Court Restrictions Don’t Block Journalists’ Access
Limitations on court proceedings in light of the pandemic are not a reason to exclude journalists from the administration of justice.
The Nebraska Press Association shared new guidance with its members, including The Daily Record, last Friday from the Nebraska Judicial Branch.
The Nebraska Judicial Branch sent an email message to county and district court clerks saying the state’s media coordinators, who typically handle requests for video and audio coverage of court proceedings, will facilitate court coverage if access needs to be limited.
News outlets may be asked to pool their coverage, especially in high profile cases, but journalists should have reasonable access to Nebraska courtrooms.
“These events create opportunities to demonstrate the court’s adaptability and openness,” Janet Bancroft, public information officer, said in the email.
