SNAP Changes And Ways To Help In Omaha

According to the Omaha Community Foundation, with more than 259,000 residents concerned about their next meal, food insecurity across our region has reached its highest level in years. Monumental changes to federal nutrition programs, particularly the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), are impacting how families can receive access to food.
Omaha Community Foundation, By the Numbers:
- 66,000 children and 17,000 seniors projected to lose partial or full SNAP benefits
- 155,000 people statewide affected by state cost-sharing changes
- 7,000–15,000 refugees and mixed-status residents expected to lose eligibility
- 10,000–20,000 working adults aged 55–64 affected by new work-reporting rules
- 10–15 % projected rise in charitable food demand by early 2026
"As of Monday, October 20th, 2025, thousands of legally admitted refugees in Omaha have lost their ability to qualify for SNAP benefits. Many of these families losing SNAP benefits are Afghans who served alongside U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan and Ukrainians fleeing the war in their country. Many of these families work at meat packing plants and factories and do not make a livable wage that can support paying for all living expenses including food. This is the first of many changes happening that will impact Nebraskans," says Restoring Dignity.
OUR REGION NEEDS TO JOIN TOGETHER TO SUPPORT OUR NEIGHBORS IMMEDIATELY.
"We are asking everyone to become a monthly donor to at least one food pantry in Omaha. Pick one closest to your home or work, or that you recognize or have supported in the past, and start giving $10 or $20 a month, or whatever amount you can. If we all pitch in, we can help support the crisis we are now in. Food pantries have informed us that they can purchase twice as much food with the same money that would be spent at a grocery store, because they buy wholesale. So monetary donations go twice as far and are preferred over dropping food off. They will also need volunteers to help handle this new influx of need," says Restoring Dignity.
