Secretary of State Actively Recruiting Poll Workers
As Nebraska presses forward with holding its May 12 primary during a pandemic, the Nebraska Secretary of State’s Office is looking to recruit poll workers.
“We are actively recruiting registered voters interested in serving as poll workers,” Secretary of State Bob Evnen said in a statement. “Conducting fair and impartial elections that are well organized and professionally managed would be impossible without the thousands of dedicated poll workers who serve on Election Day.”
Poll workers must be at least 16 years old, and they must be a registered voter if they are at least 18.
The position is paid and will not impact unemployment benefits. Evnen is encouraging service clubs and other volunteer organizations to ask to receive payment directly for their volunteers’ time.
Poll workers will receive virtual training. On May 12, each polling site will receive 25 pairs of gloves, a 540 milliliter bottle of hand sanitizer, a canister of disinfecting wipes and at least two N95 masks per poll workers, according to a news release.
Voters will be asked to maintain social distancing rules, including remaining 6 feet away from others. A black pen will be given to each voter to keep, too.
“Many poll workers are in the higher risk age category,” Evnen said. “Let’s help them out and help our communities by serving as poll workers.”
