Ricketts Touts State’s Approach To COVID-19 on CNN Program
The governor said Nebraska will go its own way in choosing when to reopen for business after public health measures were implemented in the wake of the coronavirus.
Gov. Pete Ricketts responded to a question from CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday’s “State of the Union” about President Donald Trump’s suggestion that states like Nebraska could return to work soon.
“I think one of the other things that the president said is that this is not a one-size-fits-all answer,” Ricketts said. “The states are going to be able to make their own decisions, and that’s what we’re doing here in Nebraska.”
Ricketts said that no governor in the country likely feels like they have enough COVID-19 tests.
“We’ve done a little over a couple thousand tests. Working in conjunction with our experts at UNMC, we put together a plan and a program that assumed that we would have limited testing to begin with, so we’re using rules of thumbs like how many people in every region can you find that you can’t figure out how they got it. That’s a good indication of community spread, and when we get those cases, that’s when we put our most restrictive public health measures in place.”
Tapper asked Ricketts about the challenge of competing with other states for limited resources such as ventilators and personal protective equipment.
“You can either have the federal government do everything or you can have the states do everything,” he said. “I would actually prefer that we leave it up to the states to be able to manage this, because I think that is going to be a better outcome.”
