Olympic Swim Trials to Be Split Into 2 Events, Both in Omaha

Although the fate of the 2020 Olympic Games remains uncertain, USA Swimming has announced a plan for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Swim Trials in Omaha.

The trials will be split into two competitions to address concerns about overcrowding. Wave I will be held June 4 through June 7, and Wave II will follow June 13 through June 20. Wave II will be the sole qualifier for pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team.

The trials would still overlap with the schedule for the College World Series, which plans to have its opening ceremonies at TD Ameritrade Park on June 18.

More than 1,300 athletes have qualified for the trials since the qualifying window first opened in 2018, according to a news release.

“We undertook a thorough and methodical evaluation of the trials over the last several months and factored in several critical considerations in our decision,” USA Swimming Chief Operating Officer Mike Unger said.

Josh Todd, president and executive director of the Omaha Sports Commission, said the new dual-event plan will allow the city to host two marquee events.

“We are working closely with the CHI Health Center team and are committed to delivering a safe and memorable experience for every athlete coming to Omaha to chase their dreams and to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team,” Todd said.

The swim trials have an estimated financial impact of $74 million and is particularly important to the city’s hospitality industry. Last year, the Omaha Convention & Visitors Bureau also called the return of the swim trials “a beacon of hope” for Omaha’s tourism industry.

An evaluation of the past five Olympics trials was conducted to determine which seeds ultimately qualified for joining the team. The lowest-seeded athlete to make the team was the 38th seed in 2000. The slowest athlete to make it to a final was the 41st seed in 2008.

USA Swimming will adjust the current trials time standard in each event to the current 41st seeded time. Athletes who have met or bettered that time will automatically advance to Wave II.

For those athletes who only qualify for Wave I, the top two finishers in individual events will still advance to Wave II.

A final field will include about 750 total athletes.

The event organizing committee is working with USA Swimming National Team physicians, along with the Douglas County Health Department, CHI Health, the venue and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee in the development of health and safety plans. Public health safety measures will be enforced throughout both events.

The 2021 contest will be the fourth time Omaha has hosted the swim trials. Omaha will also host the Olympic Curling Trials again, which means the city will be the first ever to host trials for both the summer and winter games in the same calendar year.
