Officials with the University of Nebraska Medical Center and its practice partner Nebraska Medicine will provide daily updates on the people being monitored in Omaha for the novel coronavirus.

The updates will also include information on the national and global status of the new virus.

As of Sunday evening, 13 people were being monitored from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

Ten people were in the National Quarantine Unit, while 13 were receiving care in the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit. “Everyone is either symptom free or clinically stable from the coronavirus,” Nebraska Medicine/UNMC said.

Two people who initially tested negative for the virus remain in quarantine and will undergo additional testing. If they remain without symptoms and test negative, they are expected to be released from quarantine March 2.

A viral outbreak that began in China has infected more than 78,000 people globally. The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

More than 2,300 people have died, and COVID-19 has infected people in 29 countries so far.

Recently, the virus was found in Italy – Europe’s first major outbreak of the new viral disease. Authorities called off the popular Venice Carnival, scrapped major league soccer matches in the area and shuttered theaters, including Milan’s legendary La Scala.

The virus likely disrupted turnout in parliamentary elections last Friday in Iran. Many voters there wore masks to the polls.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services has shared COVID-19 information at dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/Coronavirus.aspx. The Douglas County Health Department has additional details at bit.ly/dchdcovid19.

Additionally, a COVID-19 information line has been set up by the Douglas County Health Department at 402-444-3400. Calls will be accepted weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
