Nebraska State Sen. John Cavanaugh Picks Up Local Union Endorsements

OMAHA — State Sen. John Cavanaugh picked up two more endorsements from local unions in his bid to be the Democratic nominee in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.

The two endorsements came from the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen and the Nebraska State Legislative Board and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. This brings Cavanaugh’s union endorsements to six.

Cavanaugh is in a six-person Democratic primary race with business owner and political action committee co-founder Denise Powell, Douglas County District Court Clerk Crystal Rhoades, Navy veteran Kishla Askins, former congressional staffer James Leuschen and Evangelos Argyrakis.

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen chairman, Adam Hausman, said Cavanaugh “has consistently stood up for organized labor and advocated for rail safety.”

“John has been a true friend of labor and consistently fights for workers,” said Hausman, “Labor can trust him to keep his word and do right by us.”

Cavanaugh has also received endorsements from seven current state lawmakers and Bob Kerrey and Ben Nelson, who served as Nebraska governors and U.S. senators.

Rhoades received an endorsement from Omaha Mayor John Ewing. She has announced the endorsements of three local unions and said she is working to get more by year’s end.

Powell has touted a number of endorsements, including support from EMILYs List, former Omaha State Sen. Tony Vargas and other local and national elected officials.

The Omaha-based 2nd District is typically competitive. But Democrats are feeling optimistic about picking up a win in the midterms, when the out-of-power party typically gains ground, especially with Republican U.S. Rep. Don Bacon retiring.

Cavanaugh said he has “stood with labor and working people in the legislature and will do the same in Washington.”

Cavanaugh, in a statement, said, “I promise that I won’t just be at your union hall during election season, but will show up and listen to you at every turn.”
