President Donald Trump has declared a disaster in Nebraska due to the coronavirus, allowing federal assistance to the state.

The declaration last Saturday names FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor as the coordinator for federal assistance to Nebraska.

“Thank you to President Trump for approving Nebraska’s disaster request,” Gov. Pete Ricketts said in a statement.  “Nebraskans are coming together to win the war against the virus, and this declaration will help our state fulfilling that mission.”

The declaration allows eligible local governments and certain nonprofit organizations to request direct federal assistance related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Public assistance provides a 75% cost share by the federal government.

“This decision will unlock additional federal resources for our state as we work to tackle this pandemic and deliver relief to our families, businesses, and communities,” Sen. Deb Fischer said.

Iowa received a federal major disaster declaration on March 23. FEMA provided the state more than $44 million on Saturday to help defray response costs.

“Our health care workers are on the frontlines battling the COVID-19 pandemic,” Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds said in a statement. “FEMA’s reimbursement will allow Iowa to buy additional personal protective equipment.”
