FCC Takes Over Omaha Solid Waste Collection

FCC Environmental is now providing curbside collection of trash, yard waste and recycling, using covered carts and automated CNG-fueled trucks in Omaha, effective today.

“FCC will provide convenient, clean, consistent residential service,” Mayor Jean Stothert said in a statement.  “Omaha will now offer the industry-gold standard in collection, and we did it without increasing your taxes.”

Yard waste and trash will be collected together, in the cart with the black lid. Place grass clippings, garden plants, twigs, even Christmas trees in the cart.

Additional yard waste will be collected in brown yard waste bags, if the bag is marked with a pre-paid sticker. Stickers will cost $1.98 plus tax and are available at Hy-Vee, Family Fare, Supermercado Nuestra Familia, Westlake Ace Hardware, Ideal Hardware and Menards. Beginning in 2021, free, unlimited, curbside yard waste collection will be offered for 4-6 weeks. Stickers will not be needed. During that time, all yard waste collected will produce Oma-Gro. The rest of the year, yard waste will go to the landfill.

FCC will offer a disposal service at 5902 N. 16th St.  Anything that can be recyclable will be.

Old cans and bins can also be placed in the 96-gallon solid waste cart to be collected curbside on your trash day. Please do not place old cans in your recycling cart. Residents can also keep the green recycling bins for household use or storage.

Recycling collection and recycling processing are two separate contracts. The solid waste collection contract with FCC will be amended while a new processing contract is rebid.

FCC will deliver recyclables to Firstar Fiber and Nebraskaland Recycling for processing and resale. FCC has negotiated a price with both companies. Materials can be taken to either or both companies beginning in January.

FCC will receive an administrative fee during the term of this amendment, which will be in place for a maximum of one year while a long-term processing contract is rebid and awarded. The amendment requires City Council approval and will be on the Dec. 8 council agenda.

Residents are reminded that their collection day won’t change.

After the first 90 days, an exchange program will be offered for those who want to trade the 96-gallon carts for the smaller 48-gallon carts.
